Have you heard the term opportunities are knocking? Let's talk about that a little bit, shall we? Hello, y'. All.
Or should I be more civilized and say, hello, you all? Or how about, hi, everybody, I'm Michael Gross. This is the Daily Grateful, and we're going to talk about opportunities. Yeah, Love is a theme.
Very Daily Grateful energy. Opportunities rarely knock. Most of the time, you have to go looking for them. And I have found.
But here's what I found personally, all right? I never asked for a job in radio. Never, not once did I ask for a job in radio. Yet 35 years, nationally syndicated radio on radio stations all over the country.
How did that happen? Well, I had opportunities, and I put myself in a position to where the opportunity just sort of showed up. I filled in for a friend of mine doing a local gardening show. The guy by the name of Jack Ellery, who is the program director of the Sun Radio Network, happened to hear me called the guy that was the manager of the radio station down in Pinellas Park, a guy by the name of Art Deneen.
Art Deneen's a real radio guy. I should look him up. I wonder how many radio stations he has worked at since then, because he'd, like, traveled the country working at different radio stations. There were people who did that.
But anyway, he called me up and said, how would you like to do a nationally syndicated gardening radio show on the Sun Radio Network? Did that sound impressive as hell? You know it did. It just sounded like, how cool is that?
Because, you know, I used to fill in for Stan. I'd sit in my butt in the studio, and before I sat down, I'd look at all five. Lines were lit up with people calling with questions. It was just like that.
It was. It was, like, really, really bizarre. And so I said, yeah. So I went over there for the first show, and he said, you're going to be on 20 stations.
I said, wow, I'm gonna be on 20 stations across the country. That's cool. I like that. That's good.
What they didn't tell me is that the stations, each station had five listeners at the most, at most. It was a very slow build. I had to learn how to talk for two hours without, you know, taking calls. And that takes talent, which I didn't have when I developed.
I can do it now. I could sit here and rattle on for two hours. I. I could do it.
I've done it before. I could do it. I was in Fort Lauderdale one time. Certified Pest Control Operators of Florida were having a recertification Class where everybody got their ceus.
And the guy that was going to teach the ceus about. About the law, you know, all the Chapter 42, the laws didn't show up. So the guy, the president said to me, what are we gonna do? What are we gonna do?
What are we gonna do? I said, I got this. He said, what, you gotta go one hour and 15 minutes straight? I said, I got this.
You don't have any notes. I got this. Okay. Sat there.
Who goes to Dynamite? I had those people eating out of my hands. I did one hour and 50 minutes and got a standing ovation. Nobody at a recertification class has ever gotten a standing ovation, but I did.
A grateful mindset helps you see opportunities that others miss. Boy, I'm looking for that right now. Rejection is never the end. It's redirection.
Being grateful for the lesson, you know is better than the outcome. It keeps you moving forward. Opportunities often live just outside your comfort zone. And that is the truth.
And I will tell you, I rarely go outside of my comfort zone to seek opportunities. I'm trying to remember if I ever have. I never have. Maybe I have.
I don't think I have the very best opportunity. This is the truth, actually come from people that you know. And I know a lot of people. I've always known a lot of people.
You meet people, you know them, you stay in touch with them, and then all of a sudden something comes up and boom, you have opportunities. It's always happened for me that way. I like it. It's very, very, very good thing to do.
So opportunities are great. Don't go looking for them. They will come to you. But put yourself in a position to have this happening.
Put yourself in a position where people will seek you out. That's what you have to do. Like I say, I've worked for two, three, four national radio networks. Sun Radio Network went out of business immediately.
Went to work for the business for the People's Radio Network, sold to the uaw. I didn't like the people, so I said, bye, bye, and then went to work for the People's Radio Network, which was owned by the same guy that started the Sun Radio Network. He kind of got tired of it and went to work for a company called Talk America. And he was working there, and the rest of us just sort of sat there and I did the very last live show on that network, and I said, okay, now I'm done.
And I was taking my daughter to the dentist to get a cleaning, and she's. I get a Phone call myself an ordinary twinkled. And it was the guy that was the general manager of Business Talk Radio Network called me up. He says, what you doing?
I said, I'm at the dentist with my daughter. He just went in, he's getting a cleaning, he's got a few minutes to talk. I said sure, who is this guy? We talked.
Next thing you know, without my agent because my agent had gone to prison. Another story, I sat there and negotiated a deal to go on the business talk radio network. So I was on that network. Now in the middle of that.
Before that, there was another crazy ass network out in Arizona that I was on for two weeks and I just quit. I just said no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I, I did not like them. I didn't feel as though they had integrity.
So I said not rather be, you know, not good. But with Business Talk Radio Network they were bought out and became business talk or biz talk Radio Network and stayed with them. And then I got out of my contract there and stopped and I was done. I was happy to be done, as a matter of fact, delighted to be done.
And to this day I have this full studio here and my home. I do fill in work for radio stations across the country here and there. Not very often. The gentleman that was lining those up for me has also since passed.
But once in a while I'll get a call from a station and I'll do fill in work for somebody because I have the capability to do that right from here. I do commercials for different markets across the country and all of that and I'm enjoying that. That's fun. Would I like to do another nationally syndicated radio show?
I don't know, maybe, maybe. It's hard to say, but it's nothing that I'm looking for. But if the opportunity avails itself, then yeah, I just might take it. I just might pop into that.
Because you stay open to opportunities. Most of the time you don't have to go looking, just be grateful for what you have. Stop waiting, start noticing. You know, opportunities are sometimes disguised as small conversations, chance meetings or even an inconvenience.
