Ursprünglich war Opus ein Terminus technicus des frühen Musikverlagswesens. Er diente zunächst im 16. Jahrhundert als Titel für Sammelwerke, etwa "Magnum opus musicum" - heute würde man vielleicht am treffendsten übersetzen: "Große Werkausgabe".
