Oregon And Washington Are Joining The Big Ten Conference | College Football 2023

The Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies will be future Big Ten members tonight, per Pete Thamel of ESPN. Oregon and Washington informed the Big Ten earlier today that they will accept an offer to join the Big Ten Conference if presented, and the Big Ten is expected to unanimously vote tonight to extend formal invitations to Oregon and Washington. Two days ago I talked about how I believe the Pac-12 is a dead conference and that it will not exist after 2023. These reports are the consequences of the Pac-12 Conference refusing to adapt to the College Football landscape and their poor handling of resources. As a result, the 2023 season, a year where I expect the Pac-12 to have five teams inside of the Top 15, will likely be the Conference's last hurrah. The Big 12 is reportedly making moves to secure Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State now that the Big Ten has agreed to let Oregon and Washington join the league. For the Big Ten Conference and new commissioner Tony Petitti, this is a slam-dunk play. Washington Football and Oregon Football have been Top 25 programs over the past decade, with both having better success than College Football blue blood USC in that same time frame. The Big Ten now has four former Pac-12 schools, all of whom have shown an ability to compete at a high level, especially Washington, Oregon, and USC. I am excited to see USC take on Michigan and Ohio State but also pumped to see Michigan Football take the field in Eugene, Ohio State Football take the field in Seattle, Oregon Football take the field in East Lansing, and Washington Football takes the field in Lincoln. As much as these changes hurt and have negative consequences, there is unfortunately nothing we can do to change them. The Apple Cup and Civil War rivalries will likely die, and travel time will be a serious issue for Oregon and Washington as well. Nonetheless, there are more benefits than drawbacks to the Ducks and Huskies joining the Big Ten. College Football will have a phenomenal year in 2023, but the landscape of the sport will look radically different starting in 2024.
