Taiteessa ei koskaan pitäisi olla mitään normaalia. Silti vasta muutamia vuosikymmeniä on haastettu taiteen tekijyydeksi hyväksyttyä normitusta ja alettu edistämään outsider-taiteilijoidemme ja erityistä tukea tarvitsevien taiteilijoidemme yhdenvertaisia mahdollisuuksia luoda taiteesta ammatti itselleen. Aitojen yhdenvertaisten mahdollisuuksien osalta olemme vasta alkutaipaleella. Mutta Suomessakin on jo useita taiteilijoita ja Kettukin, Omapolun, Kaarisillan sekä Pertin valinnan kaltaisia toimijoita, jotka ovat venyttäneet fakkiutuneita taiteen rajoja ja nostaneet uusia teoksia ja taiteilijoita esiin. Yksi kansainvälisistä erityistä tukea tarvitsevien taiteilijoiden taiteen edistämisen uranuurtajista on Richard Bennaars, joka yhdessä Frits Gronertin kanssa perustivat taide-akatemia Gallerie Atelier Herenplaatsin Rotterdamiin vuonna 1991. Keskustelemme Richardin kanssa heidän galleriansa synnystä, taiteilijoiden valinnasta työskentelemään galleriaan ja siitä, mitä tarvitaan, jotta taiteilijat saavat tarvitsemansa tuen tuoda taidettaan esiin.
