Oswald Mosley: Britain's Fascist Leader and Founder of the Blackshirts

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Sir Oswald Mosley was Britain's leading fascist politician and the founder of the British Union of Fascists, whose Blackshirt movement sought to bring fascism to Britain before the Second World War.A former Conservative and Labour Member of Parliament, he rose rapidly through British politics after the First World War, earning a reputation as a gifted speaker and a rising national figure. Yet his career would ultimately become inseparable from fascism, political extremism, and one of the most controversial movements in modern British history. This documentary explores Mosley’s transformation from establishment politician to leader of the British Union of Fascists, a movement inspired by Benito Mussolini’s Italy and increasingly influenced by Adolf Hitler’s Germany. Through mass rallies, Blackshirt marches, and confrontations in the streets of London, Mosley attempted to build a fascist movement in Britain during the turbulent 1930s.The film examines key moments in his life, including the Olympia rally of 1934, the rise of anti-Semitic propaganda within the BUF, and the events surrounding the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, when thousands of anti-fascist demonstrators blocked a planned fascist march through London’s East End.It also follows Mosley’s relationship with Diana Mitford, his admiration for European fascist regimes, and his growing political isolation as Europe moved toward war. During the Second World War, Mosley was interned by the British government under Defence Regulation 18B as fears of invasion and internal subversion intensified. Although released before the war ended, his political reputation never recovered. In the decades that followed, he continued campaigning on nationalist and anti-immigration platforms while remaining a deeply divisive figure in British public life. This is the story of Oswald Mosley—a man once seen as a future prime minister, whose name became permanently associated with British fascism and political extremism. This episode is part of the series High Ranking Fascist Collaborators: Politicians.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
