En Países Bajos, un tribunal sentenció Facebook Irlanda -custodio de los datos personales de los usuarios neerlandeses- por no sólo emplear los datos para publicidad, sino que también los transmitió a terceros sin informar debidamente a los interesados ni tener motivos legales para hacerlo, entre el 1 de abril de 2010 y el 1 de enero de 2020. El fallo se produjo después de que a principios de enero se impuso a Meta una multa de 410 millones de dólares por infringir la legislación de la UE sobre datos personales en Facebook e Instagram.
