Ottoman Clothing

In this episode, we explore how Ottoman clothing expressed religious identity, social rank, political authority, and changing ideas of modernity. From the carefully regulated garments of earlier Ottoman society to the European-inspired fashions adopted during the nineteenth century and the Second Constitutional Period, dress became a visible arena for debates over westernization and cultural tradition. We examine the changing public appearance of elite women, the tensions between conservative religious figures and progressive nationalists, and Sultan Mahmud II’s introduction of the fez as a modern, unifying alternative to the turban. Finally, we consider how Atatürk’s reforms transformed clothing practices, banned the fez, and reshaped women’s public roles, revealing how fashion mirrored the Ottoman Empire’s transition into modern Turkey.
