Ottoman Harem's Architectural Legacy: The Valide Sultan Mosques
from The Harem Politics of the Ottoman Empire: Power Behind the Throne — Fexingo History Hosted by Fexingo
The Ottoman harem's power wasn't just political — it was etched in stone. This episode explores how Valide Sultans like Nurbanu, Safiye, Kösem, and Turhan funded and supervised the construction of imperial mosques, shaping Istanbul's skyline and cementing their legacy. We visit the Atik Valide Mosque, the Yeni Mosque with its centuries-long drama, the Çinili Mosque, and others, revealing each structure's link to its patron's life and times. Lucas and Luna discuss the role of vakıf endowments, the architect Mimar Sinan's influence, and how these buildings served as community centers, schools, and hospitals, reflecting the women's policies and philanthropy. The episode also touches on the political message embedded in mosque-building: a Valide Sultan's ability to commission a külliye signaled her authority beyond the harem walls. From construction delays tied to palace intrigue to the symbolic placement of mosques near commercial hubs, we uncover how Ottoman royal women used architecture as a tool of influence, piety, and enduring power. #ValideSultan #OttomanArchitecture #NurbanuSultan #SafiyeSultan #KösemSultan #TurhanSultan #YeniMosque #AtikValideMosque #ÇiniliMosque #MimarSinan #Külliye #Vakıf #Istanbul #TopkapiPalace #OttomanEmpire #SultanateOfWomen #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
