The dead of night as people sleep. That's when the spirits creep has the belt holes three dark things take power We like to call it the supernatural hour We are back hell wings over. You put your face on the phone. What's that?

Put your face on the microphone on the microphone on the microphone Hey everybody welcome. We are back at a supernatural hour. Why do you sound? I don't know.

I don't know. I don't know. I can't really you'd spend some money and buy one of these B2 bros We should probably do that. I'm just gonna take money out of the account funds and then shut the business off Then we'll all sound crazy loud hello.

That's why we can just that is true. Hey, we are here. It's another episode of Supernatural Hour That's our post Halloween episode with me is Tim. Now you sound like what Mike is to sound like when he's this Yeah, I know what sounds gonna wear something like an equity.

That's gonna be right. I don't know I forgot how to talk into a Well, I've got a beard. I didn't have a beard. Well, that is better.

That is better. I was having a beard I'm gonna beard for the last five years better answer so many questions. I've been doing the show. I've had a beard you have Oh Yeah, it seems like a good one.

I thought it was just a deformation. I didn't want to say anything about it Well, that's what's on your face. Yes, you know, you know, it doesn't even a beard. That's a wannabe goatee.

That's an actual goatee Soundclaws Anyway, what this is Tim a K a beaker. What's happening? And we've got Mike big stack hello. Sometimes Pumba hello Pumba hello Hey, lady.

You know, it's been like a month since recorded and uh, yeah literally to the day. Yes. I feel a little rusty You want me to get some WD-40 out of the shed? Um, does this parents know?

I can make the jokes too. There we go Everyone all right, so we are back and we've got another episode tonight and our episode. Oh, do we do we have another Amazing amazing right before we go on. We have any business by stuff.

It's online I don't think that where well, so Yeah Pause blank had gone Services There's a merchandise tab you can go buy shirts and sweatshirts and about we tote bags tote bag And tapestries and stuff and then I'm going to check it out by stuff. Yes, represent us represent Recent investigations. We have any investigations? I got one tomorrow Mike.

Do you want to talk about St. Grissmill? Benson Grissmill, what is there really to say more about Benson Grissmill? We've talked about that place so much If you've never been there, there's ghosts, okay?

No, it's mostly Wasn't prepared to talk about it. Okay, please. We did a gallery reading with a friend Kate Manton It actually went really well. We had someone that Mike wants to go shout out here.

I had three ladies. I talked to I promised the shout out to We have Molly who I believe came all the way from Washington just to come to the gallery reading which is pretty impressive So kudos to you Molly and then we also at Stacy and Melanie. I believe one of them told me I was their favorite of the three hosts here So again double kudos. Yeah, you got a fan.

I'll try not to let you down. You got a good host. I choose so Yeah, that's okay. I'm constantly told I should be the main host of the show.

I've actually had quite a few people tell me how great I am but I don't believe is it your wife and daughter? No, they would never say such things Oh, my dog loves me though. I left my Human side at work. Oh, no, it's okay.

You're kind of protected here in the house. Okay. All right So do you have any experiences? We want to talk about him?

Nope. I don't really invest together I just kind of chill in case someone like gets in trouble and I help out so you know we the group I was with we had a ton of Flash activity and oddly enough, I haven't used flashlights for a long time They're one of those tools that when you use a flashlight There's some physics stuff that can cause them to go off and on and so they're kind of unreliable But the group eyes with reason flashlights ratio answers, but we're consistently getting you know Hey, if you're here turn the flashlight make it blink two times we get two times a two time blink So we're getting actually yes, no answer to flashlights, which I haven't had for a really long time Here's the thing with the flashlight though Like if you get it set up like right off the bat and it starts like turning on and off right away instantly chances are you didn't set it up Right what happens? We've explained this before is the flashlight as it heats up it expands and it twists itself a little bit And it'll turn on and then what is it cools down? It's proven.

Yes, actually it is. Yeah, it's called physics One of our one of our investigators who's actually an engineer and engineer has explained this to me several times Yeah, I know what he's talking about If you have the flashlight sitting there for a good 10 20 minutes and then all of a sudden it starts turning on Chances are you're actually talking to a spirit? I've always looked at it this way that if the flashlight if you're getting intelligent responses on cue Please turn it on now. Please turn it off turn the left one on turn the right one off and if they're going that way I Call it good.

Yeah, it's just randomly going you're kind of to sit there and wait come on turn it off turn it off Come on turn it off then maybe it's not but if you because I've seen it at residential before where we had two And we've seen at a Benson as well. We've had two flashlights side by side turn the left one on turn the black one on Not for them both off and I both just go where it's on cue Well, I mean the spirits could have enough energy where they could do it like that You might have a spirit that doesn't have the energy to turn it off on cue instantly like that And that might take a little bit longer But again, it could also be that it's you know doing the heating up and cooling down thing and turning itself on and off But like I said like if you have a situation like that where you've had the flashlight sitting there for half an hour And it's not turned on or off once and then all of a sudden starts turning on you're more likely talking to us It's the kind of the same way I like a k2 if you're sitting somewhere with a k2 meter and nothing for 20 30 minutes and also it starts lighting up Usually emf doesn't kind of just like randomly show up after half an hour Well, you're getting a phone call and so it's the intelligence responses That's actually what Michael was getting a lot of a Benson Griss Mill was the intelligence responses You know flashlights would be off for 15 20 minutes and also you'd get on you'd be like hey If that's you turn it off and off it goes if you're here blink it twice on off twice And so we actually were getting somewhat I would consider to be reliable flashlight. Do you remember where we have a Benson Griss Mill? Yeah, well listen to the audible eye roll everybody No, we actually had it in the schoolhouse.

Okay, and in the top floor of the big mill Where the series where we were getting consistent flashlight activity? I know we popped over to the schoolhouse and there was the group that was in there I don't know if that was your group or not I might have crashed your party a little bit But there was a group in there and they had a lot of flashlight stuff I want to say Terry and Kay leaner in that group I think we left before you guys came over because I don't think we had any group crashing but they also had a lot of responses with Ghost me in a pro was going on very actively the k2 Was just going nuts and going back and forth and it was just some serious power activity out there Yeah, especially this class. So it was a good investigation. We had a good time I don't know if I recall any like crazy incidences that we had that night.

I don't know it was cold. It was It was one of the cold nights. We had a winter. It was pretty warm the next night was cold.

They were both a little on chilly side Yeah, but Saturday was colder. Yeah, I say it was cold. I was really cold not really was warm. Okay All right, so tonight's topic.

Let's talk a little bit about we're gonna talk about history of Ouija boards Are you ready to talk Ouija boards? Sure sure sure So you know you might you can lead artists. I will I will jump out So jump out of so first of all we did words came around in the 1800s before we were this is something goes back long long time There were stuff back in the ancient the Romans back used to have what they called augers who were trained to watch birds and flight and Very so things I lost my nose They watch patterns of burden flight. They also watched the sacred chickens and how they picked the ground and then What you eat and say they also looked at the entrails of sacrifice animals to determine the right thing to do Yeah, who came up with this that hey There's some roadkill.

Let's go see what the ancient Romans. Yeah, but you know, I'm just trying to figure out the mindset of hey There's some animal guts. Let's divine the future. Well, that's interesting You said it because I also have that with if you watch Harry Potter.

There's a class I believe it's called divining where they have a nation where they do the same sort of thing You know a little image appears in your little daily readings right It seems like an interesting topic well, you know, they were very superstitious bunch And so everything that anything that they could come up with and honestly, I don't know that it was all based on any kind of science I mean That's something that claims to be the tribal holy man that goes out there and says that to that turn looks kind of like an s That means that Sam's gonna die and everybody just believes it I mean who knows but it is something that was that legitimately was used by the ancient Romans there and the practice of Literal Mancy was all or the deciphering deciphering characters Was also a strong thing with ancient Chinese cultures, you know, they have all their different characters Well, they used it to tell the future. Yeah, I guess it was also rumored that Pythagoras had a talking board There's no actual historical evidence to support this but According to the Museum of Talking Boards that he did have one which is again back in ancient Roman times So it's talking boards and and communicating spirits through different devices like that That's been around for very long time So it's not something that's like as new as the we did board itself I mean that's been around since like 1800s, but like talking boards and other stuff. It's been around for hundreds of years Well spiritualism itself became big about the mid-1800s So like it especially had hard around 1848 1850 there was the Fox sisters if you've heard of them that were mediums that proclaimed that they could talk to the dead and there were some cool things that they were doing and I'm gonna go a little bit over them in a little bit here I want to say there was a lot of stuff going on in the 1800s I even like and we'll get into it in future episodes But I was gonna say that Lincoln was huge into the spiritualist movement in fact I think we plan on having an entire episode on the spiritualist movement. Yeah Thomas Edison It's been a lot of time trying to debunk it, but yeah, so 1800s were big on trying to communicate with spirits Yeah, I mean it worked for him I mean it was compatible with Christian dogma meaning that one could hold a stay on some Saturday night and have no qualms about going to church The next day, which I don't know if it still equates that way now But for me it does but I mean the spiritualism was huge back in that the 18-1800s up until like 1920s that was just like I said it was a way for people of the dead to communicate with the living and I had a whole lot of notes on my phone that got erased Well, it was an acceptable wholesome activity to contact spirits at seances.

They used to do automatic writing they do tables turning parties Where the participants put their hands on this on a small table and then they watch it begin to shout rate I can't talk anymore shake and rattle They declared that they weren't moving it and this is the thing So a lot of these things are stuff that I've almost experienced on our investigations Like I've had the one time down in the basement of Family Tree where we were trying to get new Lucy I can't even speak new see yes, that's the new one at Family Tree Trying to get Lucy to knock on the table and none of us are touching the table and we heard too very loud boom boom and shook the whole table You know so a lot of these things are things that have been going on for hundreds of years But the problem they got into was and a lot of people wanted to get into this because they're The Civil War that's what I'm trying to spit out here Yeah, I mean you'd have a lot of people that would go off to war and they never come home and I mean some of the things That were happening at the time is like you have a lot of women that would die in childbirth You'd have kids that would die of illness Like for example Lincoln actually conducted say-hances in the White House to talk to their 11-year-old son who died of an illness We have so like as soldiers going off to war never come home and people you know around them life inspectors He was like 50 years old anything like it is now So people were dying more often and they wanted to communicate with their loved ones So they would seek out people like the Fox sisters and another mediums or whatnot to try to communicate their whole Say-hances and use these items to try to connect with their loved ones Well, I say and just kind of build on what Tim is saying I mean if you go back, I mean where do you talk for those who don't know we're based out of in that But if you look back at history the Mormon pioneers come across the plains I mean people are ever left and right like Tim said kid for dying a cholera and everything else Mom's or dying at childbirth I mean give a chance to say goodbye anything and everything and kill yet And so you got to figure the people back then are still like people are today and they still mourn their loved ones They still want you know fill that loss and when every third person that you know is killing over dead Yeah, there's a strong desire to reach out and try and figure out where old Johnny was who went off to war or You know where your children went or whatnot. So yeah, I think there's a lot more interest than back then than there's now by any stretch of imagination In fact one of the articles I read said that communicating with the dead was common and it wasn't seen as bizarre or weird Which is it's hard to imagine that now we look at it And we're like why are you opening the gates of hell? You know don't touch it stay away from it You're messing with you know with with evil stuff. Where's back of it?

It was like hey, let's do it. Let's have a sense Well, and I think in modern times too and not to get too far off the rails But I think religion has really pushed back against that a lot harder than I did back then I mean, you know these days you've got religions denouncing Harry Potter as a gateway to witchcraft Which is in my opinion kind of insane. It's a fiction fantasy book But we burn them anyway, right? The many ways just I don't think it was quite as big a deal And I don't think there was quite the mass media push where you know one church gets an idea that Harry Potter's evil and it's on the news and all Other churches go.

Oh, yeah, that's right. We should be against that too. What's Arizona? It's kind of an older place I'm familiar with many instances of people thinking Harry Potter's a gateway to witchcraft I think there's actually like a burning like where they were burning books of Harry Potter as well as we do words all the big bonfire Right and not the too far from the rail again I don't think I do quite that a social media presence or the media presence back in those days So it was a little bit more rampant so Planets have actually been around for a long time And for the smart familiar with a planche it is when you see a weedy board like on Perma-mrom activity It's the kind of triangular piece and I don't know that the shape really matters But it's the piece that basically floats around the board or is pushed around the board to pick out letters numbers, etc Right to me that was a big teardrop thing and then with the weedy board if you seem like a little Like a glass or something like I find glass So I was just going over the border one-hot you can pick out the letter that is trying to choose for you The time and before those existed but with that glass some of the early ones the plants That's actually been around a long time They actually used to have some of the original ones had wheels on the back end and then for that third point if you're thinking Like a tricycle right you have your two back wheels that are wheels and then that big wheel up at the front imagine Just putting a pencil up in there and then they would all put their fingers on it And that's the point of how a planchette works is everybody at the table puts their fingers on it And then through harnessing that energy the spirits are supposed to be able to manipulate it and to do the talking and to make it move A lot of times so they would do a lot of things called automatic writing or free writing where they would start putting on a piece of paper And they would start asking questions and then you know the planchette starts writing out these words a part of problem with that was so many times It was so undecipherable what it was trying to say that it was just useless Other things that they would do is that and these go back kind of like what we do honestly with dowsing rods, right?

So you know I ask questions is your name start with an a cross it for yes No, okay Is it a B cross it when I get to the first letter your first name C is it a D You know and it takes forever to get they did back in the day like they would call out the letters and wait for the spirits And not yeah, they got to the right letter and the thing is like it's kind of how people are now They want that instant gratification so as they're talking to the spirits You know waiting for a spirit to knock on a wall for Z. You're waiting forever. Yeah, and they're not bored You know, it's where they're paying these mediums to to do these things well You guys know as well as I do you know investigations at every spirits gonna knock on a wall So I mean hey if you're in here give me a knock on the wall You can sit there and not get anything it depends on the spirit the energy and how willing they're to talk So I mean it's almost one of those exercises in futility when it comes to investigating to do the whole knocking wall for this I mean it can happen, but there's probably better chance that's not gonna happen based on my experience But when we're on an investigation, we're also staying there for several hours Whereas these people are here for an instant conversation You know they got the telegraph where they can just get beat you know within a couple minutes They're getting messages from San Francisco to New York. They're like why can't I just talk to the dead here answer me?

Yeah, it's like this got to be a better way. So this is boring. So this is when talking boards became really popular You know these people started using those because you could get that instant gratification You could use the plan chips and what not to actually see the I mean most most talking boards back in the day looks very similar to what a We do board look like today with a yes, no the numbers the letters and it would just make things a lot quicker when you're trying to communicate spirits Right and there are other things that they do too. There was a there was one call the spirit trumpet But it wasn't really a board but where they would have a medium or somebody would whisper in this big long cone And then they would try to decipher what they were saying what that whisper came out to sound like to everybody else Oh, did you not see this no?

But that reminds me like have you seen in Sidious? Yes When she puts on like the gas mask in the other guys like wearing the headphones and she's like whispering and he's writing down what she's saying Like I've personally seen you talked about auto writing right on my writing. I've actually have a friend out of California that was here A couple months ago. I actually witnessed her doing auto writing and it's it's crazy because you can see the different handwriting that was coming through You can get very decipherable words and just watching her do it.

I know that she wasn't just writing random stuff down her eyes are closed We're standing in the dark hallway of asylum 49, you know, I'm sitting there filming this I've got some of it on camera for doing this, you know, you can see their eyes are closed But you know, I don't know about you But when I'm writing with eyes closed it doesn't come out as good as some of the stuff that I saw come out when she was writing Right, especially in the dark So so yeah, so these spirit boards became a big thing It was a lot more instantaneous and there was so a lot of them were very similar There was one called a spirit scope that dr. Robert hair came out with it was round It actually looks like a clock with all the letters and numbers around the outside Some say you know, there's like some yes or no words around the inner ring of it and as you get closer to the center point There's numbers on it and dr. Herr had initially set out to debunk spiritualism by creating these boards But after experimenting with it, we actually became a believer and he instead Instead presents these devices as proof of the afterlife rather than debunking a debunking tool It's kind of funny you say that because Not just spare boards, but just investigating in general I mean I'm looking at you Mike and you came into this not being a believer But once you started like investigating and doing stuff like okay This stuff is real and I think a lot of non-believers out there who are open-minded would find that any kind of attempt to go An investigate is gonna give you Maybe a different kind of thought once you know, well the thing is is like there's a lot of people go out and investigate one time and nothing happens So there's like there's no such thing as girls When it comes to investigating you have to do it more than once like you have to give it the old college try and go like two three times Before you might actually experience something it was honestly for us. It was the third time We've gone out one time and like this was stupid and then we went for another one and like honestly I'm never doing this again this was the biggest waste of time money when we went back a third time and Holy cow the things that we you know experience this is like fishing if you give up the first day well It's funny you say that because I've been on investigations that are just off the charts activity Just things are bumping You see things you hear things you experience things and I think everybody's tables been other investigations We show up and you're like yeah I could be my living room with lights off and have just as much activity as here which is next to nothing You know and you say fishing and fishing is a fantastic analogy because it really is like fishing some days You go out and you catch the whole lake other days you go out and you just get some fishing line wet and sit there and do nothing Right, but yeah, he tried to debunk.

Yeah, it's actually a big huge pop culture icon at the time I mean he was very well known doctor And he was like I said he was trying to debunk spiritualism because there were like I said before there was all these different methods You know knocking and all things got really easy to be faked You know the knocking of her that the fox sisters had like a string with an apple that they knock on the wall I know Harry Houdini and I believe Thomas Edison actually spent a lot of time trying to debunk some of the stuff And they actually were able to debunk a lot of it Houdini in particular I know went after some for you know they had elaborate contraptions that made some of these tables rise up and You know we're not gonna get too far into that So we're gonna do an episode on spiritualism, but yeah So the most famous one is the Ouija board and so in about 1886 the fledgling associated press There's a set of reporting on this new phenomenon that was taking place in Ohio and some of the spiritualist camps And the item was the talking board This is when talking boards really started becoming popular Which basically like we said talking boards pretty much the same thing as a Ouija board This this article actually covered the majority of America like this went all over the place and there was one gentleman His name was Charles Kennard who lived in Baltimore, Maryland He decided he was gonna do something with this information because it was such a popular thing in about 1890 He actually got a group of four other investors two of them being Elijah Bond who was a local attorney and Colonel Washington Bali who was a surveyor and they started what was then called the Kennedy novelty company and the whole thing that they started This for was to exclusively make and market talking boards None of the men's were none of these guys were actually spiritualists But they were all very smart and well-off businessmen and they kind of knew how to target the niche there with the talking boards so As they were making the board they didn't have a name they came out their own board And I know it's been believed that Ouija is a combination of French and German for yes which is we for it French is yes, and then jaw is German for yes, that's not actually true That's not how the name came about now They say that it was bonds sister-in-law her name was Helen Peters and apparently she was a very talented very strong medium She came and they were started using their talking board and they had asked the board. What should we call you? What should we call the board and it spelled out Ouija and they asked the board what that meant and the board replied good luck Kind of kind of sounds eerie and cryptic, you know, just here's what I should be called good luck You know have fun with that basically But what happened is Peters the medium She's actually come forth and acknowledge that she was wearing a locket at the time that had a picture of a one in it and the word ouide was actually above the woman's picture on the locket and It's it's from the letters that the founders have released It's very possible that the woman in the locket was actually a famous author and a very popular woman's right activist named Oeda Basically the D instead of J This is some of the Peters invited to very much which is why she was wearing the locket and Apparently, I guess the spirit or whatever that was controlling the plan show the time Miss read with the locket said and that's how they got Ouija for the name of the board So I just picked its name off of something. It just read like it's in the basement of the Alamo Picking off the sign I can't remember the name of the movie, but then where there's an old 80s movie where the guy goes to high school Like what your name is like max house reading the coffee can max.

Well, I know that movie I know I can't think of it. I know half our listeners are like go you idiots It's this movie. Oh, there's so many movies where they do that we seem pick up something off of the bill for They've done a family tree to her family guy family tree family guy But well then Peter end up picking out his own name Peter Griffin Just look around the room and pick out stuff to call himself, but um, but it picked well though because I mean that's a very popular name it's something that It is it's a unique that everybody knows when you say Ouija board everybody knows exactly what that is Tell us about the patent process, Tim So they wanted to get a patent so they can actually sell this board the Ouija board and have you know Basically the rights to the talking board and millions of dollars right because they were all businessmen They wanted money they didn't care if this thing worked or not But in order to get the patent they had to prove that it could work to the the office clerk at the patent office So when they went I believe it was Bond He took his sister-in-law Peters to the patent office when he filed the application Like as a chief patent officer officer He wanted a demonstration to see that the board actually worked before he had issued the patent now apparently Neither one of the two that were filing the application knew the name of the patent officer and so what he did is Make the board smell of my name now funny enough. It did perfectly spell out this guy's name Unfortunately nor in the notes that it actually say what his name was but When they when they were trying to prove that the board worked it spelled out this guy's name perfectly however It still hasn't been determined whether or not there was an actual spirit controlling the plan shit that spelled out his name Or if Bond actually knew the patent officer's name being that he was a patent attorney interesting inside knowledge, so he might have known the guy's name beforehand, but It's still unclear whether or not a spirit actually did it or if the guy just happened to know the patent clerk's name Either way the guy was scared worked and on February 10th of 1819 The guy was kind of scared and he's like you know what here.

Here's your patent for your new toy or game 1891 right 1891 yes I might as a 90, but it's 91 so one of the in February of 1891 The first few ever my advertisements started appearing in papers all over the country The one in Pittsburgh said the Ouija a wonderful talking board answers questions about the past present and future with marvelous accuracy and it promised that there was never failing amusement and recreation for All the classes a link between the known and the unknown the material and immaterial the way to buy it right by that School well another thing in mysterious another part of the marketing thing is when they got the patent they just had to prove It worked they didn't have to explain how right and so that was kind of the mystery of how it works It was kind of something they used for marketing and being at these guys were businessmen They're just like you know whatever whatever you sell the board we want you to open up part of the fun of it though What's happening? You give us some money pretty much it is basically like these dudes like they were businessmen They didn't give two shit on how it worked all they cared about is the fact that people were paying the money for this board and the price a dollar 50 for board pretty good. That's actually pretty expensive That's about age like but people paid for it because that's pretty what was so strong right well You know how popular this board was a year later in 1892 the novelty company Kennedy Nobody company actually went from one factory that was in Baltimore to two factories in Baltimore They opened up two more in New York, and they also opened up two in Chicago and one in London This is how big they grew just making weeds words which is fascinating if you think about it because I mean how involved is really the process of making a board I mean in those days you really get a slab of wood you either paint or etch or Burn in some letters and numbers and away you go so the fact that that may factories is kind of astounding Yeah, I mean that's just amazing. I guess about another year after that to the founding guys decided that they were out I guess they just decided that they didn't like demons in their houses But the thing is is people didn't even think about spirits at that point It wasn't really like they were talking you know afraid of spirits or demons or it was just a game And in fact they actually sold it as a toy Well, that's what panels for us.

Yeah, so it's not to jump away ahead, but they still sell it as a toy Well, I not only is it a toy, but it's also a backpack and shoes and a rug and you can find wegboard whatever you want now Yeah, and again, we'll talk about that paper later in the episode though So what's the wegboard look like them? It looks like a board with letters and numbers on it Well, the thing with a wegboard is they vary by manufacturer I mean anybody knows patent law knows it after a while patent expires and basically anybody has access to it after that patent expires Yeah, but pretty much only melon Bradley's like the ones that sell put it out right as a wegboard But really anybody can make one without being a violation. I mean I've seen pink ones You don't call it a wegboard even I was even like hello, kitty ones right But basically for those who've never seen one and I would like to know what rock your under if you haven't It's generally a rectangular board that can really be any shape and generally they've got like a yes Edged on somewhere. They've got a no edge on them numbers one through or zero or nine and then the alphabet And then every time like a you know, I'm gonna have like a hello and a goodbye right and maybe one or two other like real common responses and then A plant jet which is usually kind of teardrop shaped And as far as how the letters numbers are laid out that kind of varies by manufacturer But usually they're in kind of an arch over the top of each other in the center of the board And some could be really elaborate and have some really fancy scroll work extra on the edges They can also be very simple.

I've actually seen people make their own and use their own with just a piece of paper Even I was gonna say even in the movie in the movie Weiji which is or wuja whatever you want to call it Um, that was the original thing when she was using a piece of paper that she made at school And then had a plant jet that she was using over it Doesn't have to be complex and I actually come across people using at work. I come across people using them I've been like hey, what are you doing? I've also got calls off of the mystery I've also got calls at five a.m. To hey, I was using one of these in my home Can you come over right now and help me deal with the crap that I brought into my home?

Uh, so I've got over five a.m. Does somebody's house to deal with their nonsense Yeah, I want to hear more about this people doing it work We've we've had people that have put in applications to join the team and then we've been called to the house because they're playing with the we did work That's the same one actually that's the five a.m. Call to help come save me Um, you know, the other one I was actually walking through a park at night as a police officer And came on a group of high school kids around a picnic table that basically made their own and we're using it and we had a chat about Tell you jumped out and scared him first though. I should have I didn't oh One of the things I find interesting about we do when it first came out a couple years later Um, there was a guy named William Fudd who had actually started from the ground up.

He wasn't one of the original investors He didn't help create the board Um, ended up becoming uh, I think here's a stockholder, but he ended up ended up running the company at one point and apparently he never claimed to be the inventor of the board but in his obituary in the New York Times they said he did He ended up dying in 1927 from a freak fall. Uh, he fell off the roof of one of his factories What apparently the we do board told him to build do do do yes, and then um, I'm gonna let you roll it because my It's just a spirit. Oh, in fact, um, he actually ended up taking over the company. So boe So the other guy's all bowed out, you know, as Tim was saying, uh, can our about out I guess there's a lot of argument over like who actually created the board and whatnot and it was just they they finally just Worked up with it and didn't want anything to do.

I mean they got they got rich. They were already had all their money Um, and so, uh, William, you know fold that he he said was actually worked for boe and boe Uh, who was his, uh, you know, colonel boe. He was the one that uh, well, they were shareholders Um, he licensed exclusive rights to make the board and then um, they were boom years for him and then all of a sudden then he ended up Turning everything over to uh fold who is protege and he sold it all to him for one dollar Wow, but uh, and that was in 1919 that he bought that the rest of the company for him So, um, you know, 120 years later now there's a lot of success. Um, you know, it was marketed The original market is both as a mystical oracle and it's a family entertainment fun An element of otherworldly excitement, you know, it wasn't just spiritualist who bought the board, you know, it was just a family It was like going to buy monopoly and a lot of people because a lot of people were buying these things on their own and doing this on their own It kind of cut the the spiritualist out these mediums were kind of like, hey, I'm still here.

I can still do this for you I just got a dollar 50. I can do it on my own. Yeah, so um, but the Ouija word offered a fun way for people to believe in something And you know people want to believe they need to believe that something else is out there that is powerful And this thing is one of those things that allowed them to express that belief, you know, they're they're just doing it right there in the living room and having a good time and being amazed Um, so the the boards did find their most popularity in uncertain times, you know, when people are down on their luck That's when people start looking for answers or when there's wars and there's a lot of people that you know Dying in the 1910s and 20s with the devastations of world war one Um, the maniac the manicures of the jazz age prohibition The depression in the 1900s only had the flu epidemics, uh, just around the same time as world war one So in the 1920 was so common that norman rockwell You've heard of him probably artist for the saturday evening post actually did one of his covers is of a couple that is uh using a Ouija board I sent the picture of that actually to to castle so hopefully he posted on the yeah, i'm gonna use it as the meme for this episode I think it would look cool. Um, but you know the demand just kept growing and growing Um, in fact, uh, on the great depression the demand was so high I guess it over a period of five months in 1944 One single store in New York sold 50,000 of these in a five month period Well, you know, when you're in a period where you're not working and Food's a little scarce.

Um being able to gaze into the future or keep yourself entertained by trying to gaze into the future or get an idea of You know looking for otherworldly help to help you make some decisions. I'm gonna find my fortune Yeah, i'll send something like a Ouija board seems like a really good idea if all of a sudden times are lean and you're like Should I where should I go find a job at grandma find the side the silver? Yeah, where's the silver at? Uh, you know, so I can see the appeal in those times well they just kept getting bigger from there because in 1967 Parker brothers had bought the game from the fuck company And at that time they ended up selling two million boards and they actually outsold monopoly like this was like the game to buy That's anti-american right there.

Well, this is this is also the same time like when this happened It was american troops they were going to vietnam This is when i was starting to have hard times again if we're going to vietnam or going to war interesting Right. We're worried about communist killing us. We're worried about nuclear war. I think time There's a war that we do board sells.

Mm-hmm. I think as people are uncertain about the future So it totally makes sense. I mean it all adds up So what's funny is that it was it was all you know originally it was kind of on that periphery of american culture um, it became popular and You know, it's even been accused of uh of causing a few cases of supposed murders um in fact in 19 until 1973 Um, like where they like chopped in half of the board was like you know, it's like people said that the wegivore told them to do it And so that because so that was their defense that um, well the wegivore told me to do it So I wasn't really acting on my own volition. It wasn't me.

It was the ghost that is responsible everyone Satan is good Satan is well now i'm gonna kill on the flip side of that Uh crime solvers would actually turn to the wegivore and try to use the wegivore to help solve uh murders and mysteries and stuff like that Would you want your case resting on because they were using a wegivore? They're taking a long time. Oh, yeah, one of them had to talk to us around. Yeah, we uh, give the jury wegivore to figure out whether or not you're guilty Good luck.

They're talking to blackbirds ghosts now That sounds like amethyst realm. Oh dear. Um, but uh in 1973, um, the movie exorcist came out and scared the pants off of people in theaters With all the peace soup and a head spinning a levitation and all that and that it was supposedly based on a true story Um, everybody buys if it's based on a true story. Everybody believes it and i'm a sucker for that too.

We're like, whoa, that's crazy Uh, but in the movie, uh, it was implied that 12 year old reagan was possessed by a demon after playing with a wegivore by herself And because that happened it changed how people saw the board it was no longer kind of a fun thing It turns scary. It's kind of like with the movie psycho how nobody was afraid to shot to take a shower until that she's seen from psycho And now they're all just afraid to close the shower curtain because they're afraid someone's gonna be on the other side It's kind of like don't win gay scene the movie yet people are really afraid of clouds until then Yeah, totally All that takes is one random person a random thing to happen to take something that everyone loves and turn it into something bad I mean it was really something kind of jokey hokey and silly like either lucy for example in 1951 had an episode where lucy and ethyl hostess a Onc using a weg board, you know and i love lucy's not scary Um, but for at least ten afterwards, you know ten years after the exorcist came out it was no joke Uh, it changed the whole fabric of pop culture everybody turned to the wegivore as a Portal to state portal to devil well and in reality and hopefully i'm not jumping too far ahead in the notes that Right so after the exorcist you know almost overnight weg became a tool of the devil and for that reason Horror writers and movie makers started using them in all other movies and their stories You know usually it was opening up the door to evil spirits that were held end on ripping apart co-eds and kind of like what i did in the Exorcist but outside of the theater, it saw a new major announcement from religious groups as satan's preferred method of communication In fact in 2001 in alla malamogordo at new mexico I would say Arizona before it was actually mexico it was being burned in bonfires along with copies of harry potter and disney's snow white I don't know why snow white No white i don't know. Oh why no why why because you got the wicked stepmother or the mirror the mirror that's scry It doesn't need slowly leading us down the road to different spickel destruction And racism and to play with itself yes, but christian groups even still remain wary of the board siding scripture denouncing Communication with spirits through mediums and that catholic dot com calls the wegivore to board far Far from harmless and in fact in 2011 Host pat roberts and that's developed a vangelical group if you're not familiar with 700 club But he declared that demons can reach us through the board So, you know even with all the paranoid within the paranormal community Wegivore's still have kind of a dodgy reputation and i'll see that on facebook You know pages that people will talk about knowing on wegboards whether it's harmless or whether it's not or or whether it's safe to use or whether it's just a tool Or whether it's completely fake. I mean everybody has an opinion on it and We'll go into the opinions lady though So parker brothers did buy it in this in the 60s and then has bro bought it from parker brothers in 1991 And it still holds hundreds of thousands of them.

I mean they're still just going off the boards um You know even in recent years and on tv's you know paranormal activity one and two ball featured wegivore's Well, and the brother is one of the kept selling is it kind of moved away from the whole spiritualist movement thing and people want to communicating with their family murmurs to where it's kind of like we talked about on our episode of The history of haunted houses and fear whatnot It kind of touches on that a little bit is people like to be scared So there's an element of spookiness and scariest and a little bit of danger that comes along with using wegivore That's kind of how it's marketed now a little bit And so that's that's why people are they kind of want that they want that sense of like freaking themselves out and getting scared Just like you would at a haunted house. That's part of the reason why these things are so popular But then again like he said they were in paranormal activities one and two Making breaking bed castle and some of the other stuff they mentioned They even got to the point where they were so popular the hot topics started making bras and underwear with a wegivore on them As well as like backpacks and other things so you can use I mean obviously like little miniature ones We'll do it lurch have a little miniature. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. He did actually he uh we were gonna Or I don't know where I think we're supposed to destroy it It's like jumanji. It's like beating under the ground some kids gonna find it You know and it's interesting and we probably should have mentioned this earlier in the episode If I should even start the episode with a disclaimer like maybe we'll record a disclaimer and we'll run recording and move it to the front of the episode Okay, but uh Even though we talked about it being a game and you know panties and bras and boxers made out of wegivore and keychains Apps there's tons of apps to the canal now.

Don't do it. Yeah, don't do it. Um, but in reality, um, let's say Like tim said that you sell two million of these things. Um, there's a very good chance that probably 1,000,000,000,000,000 people boy.

That's bad math. It's late at night numbers numbers are hard Uh, but essentially most people can probably use something like this without someone in the demons But the 2% or whatever percent that does um can really cause some major issues in their lives I know that we've seen it uh tim and I had that case in to willa Oh my gosh. Yeah, where that guy was using a weg board every day in reality. It's kind of like A gateway if you will, um, this is like anything if you use it in excess it could be bad.

It's just like I mean drinking usota a day probably not extremely bad for health drinking like, you know, uh 24 pack of soda a day What are you saying tim? Probably not the best for your health. That's cozy right? But it's coke zero.

So it's okay. It's okay zero calories and spare sugar. Um, no the reality of it is though Um when we do investigations we talk about rules of things you shouldn't shouldn't do when you're dealing with spirits And if you don't have that Research behind if you don't have that background you can really open yourself up to some Really nasty stuff and really some of these nasty spirits have to be invited into your life to have access to you And they can manipulate you pretty easy through a device like that to do it Well, I'll fairness even if you quote unquote know what you're doing You can still invite something in without realizing that's what you did. Um, it's it's the way I've always the analogy I like to give it's kind of like going to bed with your front door open You don't know who's gonna come in you have no idea you could have someone that comes in and robs you blind You know if someone comes in murders your whole family You have some of the disc goes hey that doors open and walk on by or you can have someone nice and just come shut the door for you And lock up whatever you don't know you don't know what's gonna happen That's kind of how it feels about a weeb board.

I think it's like I do feel that it is just another tool that you can use to communicate with spirits Because that's what it is But just like any tool that we use you don't know who's actually using it right Now the difference between because we've had this question pop up several times and I'll let Mike touch on this one But um we've had a lot of people ask well, what's the difference between using a spirit board or we do board or using dowsing rods or pendulum or Some of the other devices like even a k2 Why is it okay to use some of these devices and why are we so anti we do board? That's a great question and pipe in if I don't get the answer right here And then I have another question. You don't like you wrong. I'm wrong.

I'm wrong. No, just get that you're wrong You've been consulting with my wife Mike is long she always tells me I'm wrong just kidding love you babe. I'm sorry But maybe she called her to cut him off on your wrong. No, just just cut that part out She'll beat me when she hears it.

Um, let me give you this flaring domestic Just kidding no she doesn't get mad But uh, so there's different kind of levels of involvement with it and I think to in my mind Um, there's different layers and we have talked about it once on the show before um, but uh, you know going over it again, um kind of on the most non Intrusive onto your self-life is is gonna be your your digital equipment, right? So you're talking about k2 meters or ghost meter pros or other devices millimeters where the spirits are manipulating those electronic devices But you're not they're touching the device. They're not touching you. Oh, you're not inviting to touch you You're just sitting it down somewhere like they want right?

Yeah, you're not really holding it You're just manipulating the energy around it. They're not actually physically touching right now You go to um, dowsing rods, which I think is probably what we've decided is probably the next step into that where you have two free-floating free-floating free-floating free-floating free-floating free-floating Free-floating rods so you have free-floating rods that are in that are made out of brass so they're a conductive metal And then we have copper handles and then so when you're holding those you're touching the copper handles, but you're not touching the rod So they can move freely if you're holding them right and the spirits can either with that energy They can use their energy to cross them or they could if they wanted to physically manipulate them, but they're not touching you And that's the thing with that with a pendulum, you know holding the pendulum over Whether it's over your hand or whether it's over sheet of paper, Tim tells about pendulums because I've never used one So the way I use a pendulum is is you know, I hold it one hand and hold it over my other hand So I hold it one right hand hold it over much so it's floating over my left hand And I'll ask you know, just like you would with most devices I ask you know, can you show me a yes response and I'll get it to swing one way and then I'll get it to stop You know, I usually ask you to I'll say go back to center and it'll stop to show me a no response I always do this control first. So when I'm working with other people they can see what the difference Do over dear it was hard So they can see what the difference responses are so they can tell when it's a yes or no and usually if like the spirits confused doesn't know It'll just spin in a circle and I know castles witnessed me using a pendulum before And I'm still very weary on pendulums myself Because you are kind of you're holding the item itself It's not like the dowsing rods where you're holding the tubes and you're not actually touching the brass rods I'm gonna cut it as a great year if I can for a second And the reason I say that is because generally with a lot of depends what you're using for your pencil first off But a lot of times you've got a bead a chain and then the crystal and if they're just manipulating the crystal at the bottom that's hanging You technically have that same insulation like you would with the copper rod or the top of the chain So I honestly think you do have some separation there. I think you do it.

Maybe don't I personally will so I'll give it a second. Okay. I personally enjoy using my pendulum which was given to me by a good friend It actually it's a metal. It's not even crystal.

It's a metal point at the end And it actually has a compartment you can unscrew it and put crystals inside of it So one of the crystals that I have inside of my pendulum is selenite And being that I have that selenite in there, it kind of makes it difficult for unclean spirits To manipulate my pendulum because of the salt selenite that's in it Now you've seen me at one of our investigations where I was using one of your pendulums Which I believe was made out of amethyst or something, right? um, and Even though, you know, you say the spirits manipulating the crystal itself Um, you saw the negative effects that it had on me while I was using it. That's true. I've read all about that.

So Yes, maybe they're manipulating just the crystal, but they also have the opportunity to learn they can slide their energy up that Roper that chain or whatever and maybe they're manipulating that chain Well, what's just to play devil's advocate even with with rods so how what's to say that they're not going to be ready your hand? You know, I don't know They're really or your answer for that to be honest with you because if you do have dowsing rods if you if you play with them If you if you're focusing on it, you can move them in and out That's why I always tell people you know I was to hold super still oddly enough I think when you talk about the difference between say and a Ouija board um A pendulum and dowsing rods. I think the difference between all three devices is pretty thin. Um, I I do think there's a difference But I don't think it's a huge difference You want to jump into Ouija board itself But I've seen people use where they've got like a Ouija board or the talking board or whatever you want to call it And they use a pendulum.

I don't know exactly how they figure out what letters that they're getting off of this But I've actually witnessed someone holding a pendulum and seeing it swing around and picking letters off the board like like you would with a plaid chat So, um, like I agree with you. There's a very thin line between using these different devices to communicate with spirits And really I think it comes down to education and intent. I know nobody in this group would Touch Ouija board much less on Ouija board. Um, and you know, I've seen Mike use dowsing rods mics amazing with dowsing rods And I haven't seen him do or say anything that's unsafe Um, same with him in the pendulum other than incident he had using my pendulum in that particular location Well, I didn't properly ground myself before using that now as I always make sure I have like a piece of salamite my pocket or what not And honestly, I think the intent and the knowledge of the person using it is a huge factor Um, could all of us at this table use a Ouija board and not have issues.

Uh, there's probably a good chance that we could would I know never? Um, but again, it's it's what you're doing. I mean again We had that person applied to be an investigator They proceeded after an investigation to go home and make a Ouija board and play with that and boom they caused problems And my guess is is that she had no idea what she was doing Uh jumped in with both feet and made a bunch of huge mistakes it comes to issues Well, basically I'm opening a portal in our house and I brought through this very angry family because they're all of a sudden in this house and they don't know why So I wondered if some of that has to do with your intention of what you're doing And for that matter, you don't have to have just a Ouija board to open up a portal or to summon something really bad Um, anytime that you're mucking with things that you don't understand and you don't know how to do it safely You can really get yourself into trouble. Um, Ouija boards themselves if you don't know how if you like castle said or if you've been under a rock Um, you put your hands on the plan chat, you know, t takes two people Oh, actually it doesn't take you to do it yourself But it takes two fingers on it, you supposedly and you are supposed to talk to the spirit and it will move that That plan should across the board and highlight the letters and then or just go to yes or no if you're doing it that way Essentially, but they're you're allowing that spirit to communicate through the plan ship by manipulating your energy or moving your body Right you are the one that's moving it not what we're doing extra dangerous more so than holding release to letting it's written manipulate dowsing rods or Really still emitting them manipulate the crystal on the end of a and this is where it gets so scary The other thing is I've never heard of anybody using dowsing rods having somebody a demon Well, another thing to do is happen.

Let's look at it. Let's look at the realistic Um use of say a Ouija board. Um, it's marketed and very clearly available to anybody So some jouxima who doesn't know anything about anything can go down to the local Toys R Us and pick up a Hasbro Ouija board, they're either gonna go home by themselves and screw around with it not knowing what they're doing Um, and if they get activity on it, um, they can be manipulated into in the case of like say Annabelle Believing that there's a child spirit that's died in the house when it's really and I always use this term shadrak then dying, you know An evil spirit or you're gonna end up with a bunch of goofy high schooler college kids a big group of them who think it's You know a big goofy game and they're gonna take it really lightly and say and do some things that are probably gonna Like tim set open a portal and home and invite some stuff in It's just who is using it and how they're using it is just a really bad combination. Anyway, you look at it Well, and I know several people that have practice or do practice wica And they have there's like a ritual that you do to correctly open the board and correctly close the board and whatnot And I still feel even doing that You still can invite something in that releasing you're writing it in Because a lot of people are just like they like it's like they want to have that feeling of being scared And they're not using it to like, you know To Yeah, they want to communicate spirits, but they want to there's like curiosity of like how does it work and why not and Most people they're not probably not in the right mindset like we tell everybody when you're on investigation your best tool is your body And when a lot of people are they're trying to be scared and they want to play with this game or this Ouija board They're probably not in the right front of minds where they're not listening to the body of something negative does come through or it comes to the house Because I mean I've read so many stories.

I mean read the demonologist He talks about it there quite a bit with a case I believe that he is a Ouija board and then you hear about kids that take the Ouija boards and play with it in the room And and I think that's how we got we talked about on our Chris objects episode They were the kid that did that and ended up getting a He bought like a camera was with some black thing Yeah, the statue had been used in a like a cult rituals But I want to stand out the most to me is one of the warrants case where this daughter was playing with the Ouija board almost daily and the spirit Convinced her that he was a teenage boy and that had a crush on her and wanted to date her or some crap like that And so she was constantly playing with this Ouija board because this she ended up providing a demonic into the home But it came across to her as something friendly like a teenage boy They're recently passed away and just wanted someone to talk to and the next thing no rocks are raining on the house But only in their yard like nowhere else and like tires are getting slashed and all sorts of chaos just started breaking out Well in that particular case too, the police officers actually came and saw the rocks falling from the sky on that house Well, there's also like they talked about how Some of the like a door like disappeared and reappeared in the basement like not saying that playing with the Ouija board is going to cause that Extentive Hauntings in your home, but it could And in reality those are pretty extreme cases Most of the cases that we've seen I'd say the vast majority of the cases we've seen Have been lesser hauntings But in my opinion some of those lesser hauntings and for in some cases even worse than well Like I said just inviting an angry family into your house is one thing when we had the one case that I'm draper Relays that they threw the board away and then still showed up like like back in the house the next day Um, they ended up having like a couple type twos in the house that were trying to go after one of the renters At least in our house in twill it like I mean the dude was speaking perfect Latin to us and he didn't he's already studied that Yeah, this one is ours, Priest is a Information we're getting in there with some really Is that a Ouija board case as well? Oh, yeah, daily use And that's the thing too is you know, you hear about like alcohol addictions and you hear about drug addictions and porn addictions I mean Some people especially ones who use these things alone develop almost an addiction where they have to talk to it near constantly you know where they Against such coolers cool one of these my air quotations cool results that they just consult it daily And if you get a negative spirit there an evil spirit or demonic spirit They're gonna be giving them all kinds of interesting information to kind of keep them coming back And keep manipulating them to honestly you don't even need a weedy board to do that in your home I've heard stories of people that are so Right where I just With collecting EVPs in their own home that they're constantly conducting EVP sessions in their house and they've gotten the points where they become Reclusive from their family and and whatnot so I mean Even even trying to get EVPs can be as dangerous as using we do board It's just kind of like knowing when to stop it's like I said earlier, you know a little bit here a little bit there Maybe not so bad, but when you're doing it excessively, that's one of the broads attention That's a good point with that, you know, some of the last summer right after I started using dowsing rods You know, we have a fire pit on the backyard and we have Tim and Brandy come over and sometimes we just mess around with the dowsing rods out there in the back until Peaches finally said, you know what? There's a type three next door the fence that's just really interested in what we're doing and We decided we're no longer gonna use the dowsing rods out what a fire pit anymore And it's just like we've always said, you know, don't investigate in your own home Well, what's a guy on YouTube? He made the port or the portal oh huff right right enough.

No, it's It's Steve yeah, there's a guy on you two that's a paranormal investigator and I'm using my air quotations again But he basically sit trying his home all day video records himself doing EVP sessions and other things in his own home And you know when Tim was talking about people who get so wrapped up in investigating that that's all they do You know, he's the guy who bought into my mind because he literally is constantly catching orbs He's constantly talking all these spirits that he vice was home. He's going outside I mean he catches EVP's everywhere but I guarantee he's drawing the stuff He's had some major stuff in fact He actually disappeared from things for a while because he had so much bad stuff hitting him that he just stopped Well, it's funny that he's back doing it again Yeah, I mean really at any point if you do this and you aren't careful you can potentially drag in and get dragged into some really bad stuff It's one of those things where we've had people contact us I don't know if you remember not Tim the guy who contacted us wanting to know where he could find him on experience Oh, yeah, I believe our answer was anywhere. Yeah, I think our answer was anywhere in your idiot if you're looking for them Was kind of more or less long a short me we made it a little At that point it's just like you don't have to worry about finding them. They'll find you Yeah, if you're looking from that hard, they'll find you.

Yeah, so if you want to talk to spirits, don't do it at your house Don't go to we just come out and work our sense. Yeah, we're somebody where we know what we're doing and we can help keep you from getting yourself in trouble It's safety if you're wanting to talk to like a deceased loved one We know people that you know, I would recommend go to synchronicities and sandy I mean that's what I would recommend because they have all sorts of different mediums there throughout the week One of them being our friend Esther Graves. She is awesome. I love you.

I've met her I know caden mattinson another one of our friends that we've had on the show a couple times He can get in touch with loved ones I would further though add to that that if you're looking to talk to a deceased loved one I would still take even with the best mediums. I would still take that with a grain of salt because there's really never any true guarantee Of where the information you're getting is coming from so you have to still be careful with that But yeah, it's green on the Ouija boards and things of that nature probably not the wisest idea That's why I like some of those mediums and the people that work at synchronicities Because I'll rent out like a room to do the readings or whatnot and I know Esther for example She'll go in and she will cleanse that room and she'll set up a grid and whatnot and make sure That that room is safe and secure when she's doing her readings I've actually had some energy work done there myself with a different energy healer And it's the same thing like they go through and they push out all that negative energy if there's any in there And they'll set up like a crystal grid. They'll make sure that you know things are taken care of so it's the chances of something negative coming through is Is not as good right but still be careful. Um, but yeah, is there anything else you don't have to cover with words mike?

Just don't do it. Just don't it's not icky. It's opposite. It's just it's just why muck with it It's like playing with matches.
