Our Extended Ryle: A Call to Prayer - Depend on it, Prayer is Power.

I cannot get enough of J.C. Ryle’s dedication and wisdom. Catching us back up, Bishop Ryle has been illustrating “eminent” Christians, and as he finishes up with these examples he encourages us with: “Depend on it, prayer is power.” We then turn to today’s exhortation: “Prayer obtains fresh and continued outpourings of the Spirit. He alone begins the work of grace in a man’s heart. He alone can carry it forward and make it prosper. But the good Spirit loves to be entreated. And those who ask most will have most of his influence. Prayer is the surest remedy. Against the devil and besetting sins. That sin will never stand firm which is heartily prayed against. That devil will never long keep dominion over us which we beseech the Lord to cast forth. But then we must spread out all our cage before our heavenly Physician, if he is to give us daily relief. Do you wish to grow in grace and be a devoted Christian? Be very sure, if you wish it, you could not have a more important question than this—Do you pray?” We see a quick testimony of the power of entreating God over besetting sins, and the assert” 1. There is sanctified ambitions: A. To be pleasing to God. B. To serve as an overseer. C. To press on to the upward call. D. To press on to maturity, E. To play our part in the building up of the church. Prayer and Bible study is the surest way to fulfill those ambitions. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more."
