This criteria stemmed from the Old Testament sacrificial system, where the sacrificial lamb had to be without defect or imperfection to be deemed acceptable for offering. In the New Testament, Jesus is often referred to as the Lamb of God, symbolizing his sacrificial death to atone for the sins of humanity.
