[Outlook-in-Five] Russia – Ukraine conflict: The new energy shock

from Bank of Singapore · host Bank of Singapore

Our commodity and currency strategist, Sim Moh Siong, looks at the Russia-Ukraine crisis and how their conflict will impact the global economy and financial markets. Energy prices moved higher over the past week as the invasion has increased the risk of a disruption to Russian energy exports. Over the weekend, the US and its allies also announced that they will place sanctions on the Russian central bank and remove some Russian banks from the SWIFT financial messaging system. There is uncertainty about the probability of sanctions which might be imposed on Russian energy exports, as this may result in a spike in oil prices, and send significant stagflationary shock that would retard growth and boost headline inflation globally, also weakening the Euro, especially if the surge in oil prices is accompanied by soaring European gas prices. How will these latest market developments impact investors and the global economic recovery?  Tune in to find out more.
