Overcoming Maya: The Great Cosmic Illusion — Swami Bhaskarananda

Beginning with the meanings of the Sanskrit word maya as "magic" and "illusion," he examines how Hindu philosophy distinguishes between the unchanging, eternal reality of Brahman and the constantly changing world of experience. Drawing on examples from philosophy, comparative linguistics, modern cosmology, and everyday perception, he explains the relationship between the attributeless Absolute (Nirguna Brahman), the personal Creator (Saguna Brahman), and the apparent universe that arises through the power of maya. Throughout the talk, he illustrates why Vedanta regards the phenomenal world as relatively real while affirming the Divine alone as the ultimate, unchanging Reality.The second half of the lecture focuses on the practical question of overcoming maya through spiritual practice. Swami Bhaskarananda explains that ignorance of one's true nature creates the illusion of individuality and separation, while disciplines such as meditation, devotion, and the practice of Raja Yoga gradually purify the mind and reveal the Divine Reality underlying all existence. Using analogies including dreams, hypnosis, water in its different states, and a movie projected on a screen, he illustrates how spiritual knowledge dissolves ignorance without denying the world's practical reality. Concluding with teachings from Sri Ramakrishna on vidya maya (the liberating power of knowledge) and avidya maya (the binding power of ignorance), he emphasizes that the goal of spiritual life is the direct realization that Brahman alone is real and that every individual is, in essence, one with that infinite Reality.
