Overcoming Prejudice Through Exposure

from The Autistic Mile Hosted by Jim Gaffney

New and unfamiliar things are often met with fear long before they’re met with understanding. Major technological innovations and autistic people can sometimes face a similar social pattern: skepticism, misunderstanding, and even prejudice simply because they challenge what people are used to. History is full of innovations that were once treated as threatening or disruptive, only to become ordinary parts of everyday life once people understood them better. As familiarity grows, the fear often fades. What once seemed like a crisis eventually becomes something so normal that society barely remembers why it was controversial in the first place. That pattern can offer hope for the autistic community as well. As autism becomes more widely recognized, diagnosed, discussed, and understood, more people will have direct experience with autistic family members, coworkers, classmates, friends, and neighbors. Greater visibility does not automatically eliminate prejudice, but familiarity and education can make misunderstanding harder to sustain. The more society learns to see autistic people as ordinary members of the community rather than something unfamiliar to fear, the more room there is for acceptance, accommodation, and genuine understanding. Change can be uncomfortable—but sometimes yesterday’s uncertainty becomes tomorrow’s normal. And that offers plenty of reason to hope for a future where autistic individuals are met with far less stigma than generations before them. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #UnderstandingAutism #DisabilityAcceptance #Inclusion #SocialChange #Technology #Innovation #FightingStigma #Acceptance #FutureOfAutism #YouTubeShorts
