Overcoming The World - Part 3

from This Excellent Church - TEC · host This Excellent Church

Brother Sam continues this teaching series and begins to hone in on the idols in our context. Money. Brother Sam reminds us of 1 John 2:15, that no one can love the world and love the Father in Heaven. Apostle John merely reechoes the words of his Master; our Master: it is impossible to serve God and Mammon. Money replaces God in our lives by promising (like all idols do) only what God can fill in our lives. Money brings a sense of security, removes seeming limitations, and connects us with the high and mighty, yet pushes God into the periphery of our consciousness. Idols do not mind sharing. So the love of money can mask itself as a means to also loving God. But Paul tells Timothy that the desire for money brings piercings with many sorrows. The idol of money ultimately shows what we fear. Only God is allowed to have our love and fear, our Devotion, and our devotion. But the sermon does not leave us without a sense of hope. For the God who by the Holy Spirit exposes our idols, it also shows us how to keep them under. “For godliness with contentment is great gain”. A heart that is content with God; knowing fully well that He will never leave us or forsake us is a heart that is yielded to God. A heart that can conquer our contextual idol of money
