Did Canada’s multicultural story begin in the 20th century, or did it start centuries earlier with free Black interpreters, 3,000 Black Loyalists, and the Underground Railroad?Contrary to the popular belief that Canadian multiculturalism began with 20th-century immigration waves, historical evidence reveals a foundational Black presence dating back to the early 1600s. Figures like Matthew DaCosta, a free multilingual interpreter in the 17th century, were integral to early European-Indigenous negotiations. This narrative expands to include the massive migration of over 3,000 Black Loyalists in 1783, who fled the American Revolution for promised freedom, founding communities like Birchtown, Nova Scotia. They were joined by the Jamaican Maroons, legendary resistance fighters, and later by over 30,000 freedom seekers via the Underground Railroad who built thriving towns like Buxton and Dresden.Despite their role as nation-builders who established schools, churches, and newspapers, these communities faced systemic betrayal. Promises of land and equality were often broken, leading to the creation of segregated, underserved enclaves. The tragic story of Africville in Halifax exemplifies this struggle: a tax-paying community denied basic services for a century before being forcibly demolished in the 1960s. Yet, their legacy persists through military service (from the War of 1812 to the No. 2 Construction Battalion in WWI) and profound cultural contributions.
