The act of understanding is the act of two potencies:

i) passive potency (the potency of the thing to be known by the intelligence)

ii) active potency (the potency of the intelligence to know the thing)

This elaborates on the limitations of knowing things, intelligible species, the creation of a concept, and the distinction between the latter two.
