Padres Edge Wild Card Race | San Diego Padres News

The Padres are on fire, riding an eight-game win streak that’s turned their September into a playoff race — and they’re just one game behind the Phillies for the second Wild Card spot. But here’s the catch: if they make it, they’d face Philadelphia in a potential Wild Card Series — a matchup loaded with bad memories. The Phillies have crushed San Diego since 2022, sweeping all six games this season and boasting a 23-7 record against them. Their lineup, led by Harper and Schwarber, has a history of dismantling the Padres’ dreams. And while Philly’s pitching is deep, a potential injury to ace Jesús Luzardo could weaken their postseason punch. Good news? Other Wild Card foes like the Cubs or Braves don’t carry that same psychological weight — making Philly the toughest, most painful roadblock standing between San Diego and the postseason.
