PADRES POSTCAST: Tatis Hits TWO HRs, Padres Rally Falls Short! Cubs Hit 5 HRs, Win 9-7, Take Series

from Locked On Padres - Daily Podcast On The San Diego Padres · host Jim Gries Grieshaber

The Padres refused to quit Wednesday night at Wrigley Field—but digging themselves into an early hole proved too much to overcome.   After falling behind 5-1 in the second inning and trailing 9-3 late, San Diego stormed back with a four-run eighth inning to make it a two-run game and brought the tying run to the plate. But the comeback ended there as the Cubs held on for a 9-7 victory and clinched the series.   Fernando Tatis Jr. continued his hot stretch with TWO home runs, Manny Machado added a two-run blast, and Gavin Sheets crushed a three-run homer during the eighth-inning rally. The Padres pounded out 13 hits and four home runs, but Chicago answered with FIVE long balls of its own—including two from Dansby Swanson—as Wrigley Field turned into a home run derby with the wind blowing out.   The turning point came in the second inning when JP Sears surrendered a solo homer to Swanson and a three-run blast to Alex Bregman, putting San Diego in catch-up mode the rest of the night. Sears struggled, but after him the bullpen largely settled things down. Wandy Peralta continued his dominant scoreless streak with another strong outing, while the offense nearly completed one of the club’s biggest comebacks of the season.   We’ll break down the second-inning collapse, the incredible fight shown by this Padres lineup, Manny Machado’s huge eighth-inning at-bat, the home run explosion, and what this loss means heading into Thursday’s series finale in Chicago.   If you’re a Padres fan, you’ve found your home.
