Fernando Tatis Jr. did everything he could to carry the San Diego Padres — but the offense could not deliver when runners were in scoring position. Tatis homered twice, including an opposite-field shot in the ninth inning, but the Padres finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in Game Two of the series. Samad Taylor went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run, Jackson Merrill had two hits including a double, and Manny Machado drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly. But outside of Tatis, Taylor and Merrill, the rest of the Padres combined for just one hit in 18 at-bats. San Diego repeatedly wasted opportunities throughout the game. Jaylin Bowen tripled in the third, Taylor and Machado reached behind him, but the Padres failed to score. Merrill reached scoring position in the fourth and eighth, Harris stole second in the seventh, and still San Diego came away empty. Randy Vásquez allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings before Bradgley Rodriguez and Yuki Matsui combined for scoreless relief. Matsui delivered a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts in a 2-2 game. The decisive moment came in the eighth. Adrian Morejon allowed De La Cruz and Stewart to reach before Craig Stammen intentionally walked Matt McLain. José Trevino immediately singled home the go-ahead run, and Juan Brito added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. Tatis gave the Padres one final chance with his second homer of the game — a 361-foot opposite-field shot to right for No. 19 on the season — but San Diego could not complete the comeback.
