PAE: Shrink Your Enlarged Prostate Through Your Arteries (Not Your Penis!)

Our listener has heard us discuss high intensity focused ultrasound as a treatment for prostate cancer and wonders if it could also treat his enlarged prostate. HIFU is a well established treatment modality for precisely targeting cancerous areas of the prostate and ablating them while minimizing impact to surrounding tissues and reducing potential side effects. It is not, however, a recommended treatment for an enlarged prostate. HIFU can actually cause more prostate swelling and generally fails to shrink the prostate quickly enough. Instead, Dr. Mistry offers the non-invasive and very effective procedure of prostate artery embolization to treat enlarged prostate. Performed by interventional radiologists, our excellent partners at Advantage IR, this process involves using the arteries (vs. going up through the penis) to cut off part of the blood supply to the prostate, thereby shrinking it in size.
