Pamola The Protector of Mt. Katahdin, Maine.
from Reality Pop by Keith Brooks · host keithbrooks
Pamola is a snowbird spirit in the mythology of Abenaki (Penobscot), indigenous peoples in the northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. In ancient beliefs of these people, Pamola (means: "he curses on the mountain") is said to be the God of Thunder and guardian of Mt Katahdin (“The Greatest Mountain”), the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Maine at 5,267 feet (1,605 m). Members of the Penobscot Tribe believed that the fearsome god, Pamola, lived in a cave along the precipitous Knife Edge on mount Katahdin. Pamola has the body of a man, head of a moose, and wings and talons of an eagle and purportedly stood thirty feet high. Early Native American guides reportedly refused to climb above the tree line on the mountain range out of fear of being killed and eaten.
