PanAm Podcast: Supreme Court Upholds Trump's Travel Ban in Interest of National Security

President Trump scored a major victory this week, as the Supreme Court upheld his September 24 travel ban, in a 7-2 ruling. Yet, this is not a final ruling, as several appeals are currently working their way through the federal courts, specifically in the 4th and 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. While immigration law clearly gives the president the authority to impose travel bans if it is in the interest of the United States, the ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights argue that it is in fact a religiously discriminatory "Muslim ban." However, the ban only affects 6 Muslim-majority countries, which constitute less than 10% of the world's 1.6 billion Muslim population. It is likely that the Supreme Court will make a final decision in their current term, which ends in June 2018, but based on this recent decision, it appears likely that Trump's travel ban will pass Constitutional muster.
