Parables — The Good Samaritan
from LifeWell Messages
Opening a summer series on the parables, this message argues that the best-known story in Luke 10:25-37 is also one of the most misread. The point, it contends, is not chiefly the Samaritan's kindness but the lawyer's original question: what must I do to inherit eternal life? The expert answers correctly — love God, love neighbor — and Jesus says, do this and you will live. The difficulty is that no one can. If breaking one command makes a person guilty of all, the law functions like a schoolteacher, exposing the impossibility of earning what only Jesus can give. The story of ruin, rejection, and redemption then lands on its real application. Salvation is not a joint effort or a sum of good deeds; it is received, not achieved, through Christ alone — a teaching the parable was answering all along.
