Parables — The Parable of the Mustard Seed

from LifeWell Messages

Concluding the parables series, this message turns to Luke 13:18-30 , where Jesus likens the kingdom of God to a mustard seed and to yeast worked through dough. For a people expecting an apocalyptic, judgment-bearing kingdom, the smallness and quiet of these images was a shock. The kingdom does not arrive with cosmic spectacle; it is already in their midst, in the person of Jesus and in those who follow him. Coupled with the teaching on the narrow door, the passage warns that eating and drinking with Jesus, or sharing his streets, guarantees nothing apart from genuine repentance and faith. The hard edges of the text are not softened: salvation is found in Christ alone, not in moral effort or assumed belonging. Yet the kingdom is inclusive for all who enter through that narrow door, and the call is to surrender pride and let God's reign permeate every part of life.
