Instead, we had parents who merely mirrored our intensity, shut us down & shut us up, or sometimes even escalated the conflict. There is a better way. This message powerfully addresses anger in us and our kids.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1.)  Take some time individually or as a group to talk about these three scenarios;a.     How your kids express angerb.     How you express angerc.     How your parents expressed anger2.)  Because kids are still developing emotionally, socially, and physically, they don’t always have the capacity to understand the source of their anger or express it appropriately. If parents are unwilling or unable to help their child process it, understand it and express it appropriately, the child will move into adulthood more prone to angry outbursts and more prone to getting stuck in their angry feelings. What are some ways you have found useful in helping kids better understand and express their anger?3.)  A parent that can’t control their anger will be unable to teach a child to control theirs. What do you do to “tap the brakes” (so to speak) when you find yourself getting angry? Since anger is a secondary emotion (never the first thing we feel), but always flows out of hurt, fear, or frustration, how do we use that to help us better understand the source of our anger and address the actual precipitating event?4.)  The Bible says, ...the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness...  Exodus 34.6.  These words are so important that they are quoted verbatim throughout the rest of the OT (Numbers 14.18; Nehemiah 9.17; Psalm 103.8,17; 145.8; Jeremiah 32.18-19; Joel 2.13; Jonah 4.2).  You can also hear echoes of it in Deuteronomy 5.9-10; 1 Kings 3.6; Lamentations 3.32; Daniel 9.4; and Nahum 1.3. Can you name any Old or New Testament examples that illustrate how God is “slow to anger”?5.)  Patience is intimately tied to the proper management of anger because the word literally means “to be slow to heat up”. Patience is also tied to being an understanding person (A patient man has great understanding.  Proverbs 14.29). The better we understand our own anger and what drives it – the more we can control it. The same thing is true with our kids. So what do you know about yourself and how anger affects you?   With your child(ren), what makes them angry? Where do they struggle the most with expressing anger appropriately?https://www.springcreekchurch.org/ #realspringcreekchurch #parenting #ratedpg #whatkidsneedmost #choices #consequences #anger #patience #reaction #deescalation
