Parenting Pointers with Dr. Claudia - Episode 285

from The Dr. Claudia Show · host Smilecom Media

Topic - Struggling High Schoolers. Is your high schooler still struggling with academics? Will Ryan be employable and independent? Parents ask me, “Is it too late?” Well, it’s late, but it’s not too late. If Ryan is seriously struggling, it may be a sign he won’t make a successful transition to young adulthood. Will he be employable and independent? First things first. A thorough assessment will reveal Ryan’s learning potential, processing skills and mastery of reading, math and written language. Create a plan to develop job-related skills. He needs a dual enrollment program focusing on intense academics in the morning with socialization at school in the afternoon. Specialized programs to improve reading and writing will increase his skills dramatically. This immediate, intense and individualized instruction is required to compensate him for the education he missed. If he qualifies for special education, he’s entitled to educational services until the day he turns 22. Don’t give up. It’s not too late.
