Parkinson's Patient Plays Clarinet During Brain Surgery

from Free Beer and Hot Wings: Free Clip of the Day · host Free Beer and Hot Wings: Free Clip of the Day

Denise Bacon, at 65 years old, went in for brain surgery to ease her Parkinson’s tremors as her symptoms inhibited her ability to walk, swim, dance and play her beloved clarinet. When she went in for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), she likely didn’t expect to bring operatic energy into the operating room as surgeons had her play clarinet while they carefully implanted electrodes in her brain. The King’s College Hospital doctors adjusting the stimulation in her brain as she played until her shaking subsided, her hands steadied and her music came back to life. It was part miracle, part jam session, and proof that sometimes the best way to fine-tune the brain is to give it a solo.
