Parkinson’s Resources in Houston

The Houston Area Parkinson's Society, called HAPS has a wealth of resources for patients with Parkinson's Disease and their families. Celeste Harris, Director of Social Services with HAPS  sits down with Kim Hegwood to discuss the resources her organization has to offer. They will discuss: 1. What is Parkinson's disease? 2. When should you ask for help? 3. As a caregiver of someone with PD, how can you support your loved one? 4. Why is the management of PD so important? 5. How can HAPS be a resource? Bio: Celeste Harris, LMSW is Director of Social Services with Houston Area Parkinson Society. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas, she completed her Master of Social Work from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. With a focus in healthcare and older adults, Celeste first worked with HAPS as a graduate intern and then joined the HAPS team as full-time staff in 2005. Celeste works directly with clients as a case manager and support group facilitator, currently running 12 HAPS support groups both for individuals with Parkinson’s and caregivers, coordinates enrichment events for the Parkinson’s community, and serves as a Field Liaison supervising social work interns. She plays an active role in program and educational content development and frequently speaks at community outreach events. Additionally, Celeste is well known in the Parkinson’s advocacy community, serving first as an Assistant State Director for Parkinson’s Advocacy Network and currently as a Policy and Advocacy Volunteer and a Fox Trial Finder Ambassador for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
