He was publicly displaying the Midianite princess with whom he was consorting with. The reward Pinchas received was the Kehunah, priesthood. The Talmud explains, that when Hashem anointed Aaron to the Kehunah, he said, that this appointment was for Aaron, his sons, and the future generations. Since Pinchas was alive when by the anointment, he did not receive the Kehunah. We find the reason he received the Kehunah as a reward. We find out the first thing a person must do, to accomplish any goal. Have a great Shabbos!
