Why Couples Fight: Questions, Gaslighting and Playing Dirty (Part 1)
from Closeness Hosted by Tari Mannello
Every couple fights. It's almost never about what you think it's about. In Part 1 of this series I unpack the mechanics behind relationship conflict: the questions you ask when you already know you won't like the answer, the manipulation tactics so subtle you may not recognize them, and the mind games that feel like intuition and are often fear. I talk about when questions become interrogation and how to spot controlling ones, why tone and energy matter as much as words, how to ask hard questions well, why you don't have to answer everything, the stories we invent and believe, playing fair, what gaslighting means and what I call reverse gaslighting, accusations and insinuations, why nobody is a mind reader, and how to tell intuition from fear. In this episode Questions can be weapons. Interrogation and punishment hide inside "just asking." You don't have to answer everything. Some questions don't deserve an answer. Stories feel true. Imagined worst cases start fights. Gaslighting is overused. And its reverse is common too. Intuition isn't fear. Learn the difference before you accuse. My name is Tari. I'm your host. And today's podcast is a bit unusual compared to the racy and intimate nature of what we usually talk about on here. Rather than speaking about closeness and intimacy, we're talking about all of the ways that sex and intimacy get hijacked due to everything from a silly argument to fights, emotional warfare, and the myriad ways that manipulation tactics are deployed in our own relationships, sometimes without us even knowing about it. So why do we fight? Isn't it almost always over something small or trite? Or are we really triggering each other's deepest emotional wounds? Someone feels misunderstood, someone didn't hear correctly, someone assumed the worst or always just seemed to think that you meant something completely different than what you said. Sometimes our partners don't play by the rules, and sometimes we break them as well. 0:55Now, these episodes are not my favorite to make. They're not the most fun, and they're a little heavy. You may get triggered not so much by what I say, but because you recognize what I say in your partner
