Part 1 : Pennhurst Asylum

****sorry for no video this week*** Known as Pennhurst State School and Hospital or Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-minded and Epileptic, what was once a state-ran institution for the mentally and physically disabled became a true place of horrors. It was Pennhurst and an eye-opening expose done by a young report that began the reform for mental health. Opened from November 23rd, 1908 till its much needed closure on December 9th, 1987 (79 years) it went from being a place to help those who were unable to help themselves to a place that the state deemed undesirable (immigrants, criminals, mentally and physically handicapped) within 4 years of it opening it became overcrowded and under constant pressure to house the population no one wanted to deal with. Now there was no age limit nor was it just male or just female. In total Pennhurst has over 20 buildings on 1200ish acres of land and a vast tunnel system that connected the various original buildings on the lower campus together. There was also a train station within Pennhurst that would be used to deliver supplies to the campus. The residents were categorized into 3 classifications and then they would also be assigned to various jobs on campus as well. Chrissy shares some dark moments of history involving eugenics and all.
