Part 2: Elevating Fathers with Dr. Ken Epstein, PhD, LCSW.

from HealthCare UnTold · host Dr. Ken Epstein, Gerado Sandoval, Barbara Garcia, Barbara Ann Garcia

In response to the previous podcast on Fathers of New Mexico, Dr. Epstein shares his thoughts on the importance of such family-supporting organizations. Our children need their father's family involvement to provide good role models and a healthy future. Due to the mass incarceration of men of color, many fathers have been absent from their children's lives. The trauma associated with a father's absence contributes to generational family trauma.New social welfare policies that recognize the impact of mass incarceration and the importance of fathers' involvement in families can go a long way to ensuring healthy children and families.  https://healthcare-untold.simplecast.com/episodes/johnny-wilson-ken-epstein

Dr. Ken Epstein, PhD, LCSW returns to Health Care Untold to discuss the importance of programs like Fathers of New Mexico. Fathers are important for the development children and have often been neglected in support systems for families and research. The mass incarceration of fathers has also put families dependent on our Social Welfare systems, and post incarceration policies also keep fathers away from their wives, partners and families. New social and anti-poverty policies should recognize the important roles of fathers, the impact of mass incarceration on fathers' employment opportunities, and the importance of fathers' involvement in our children's lives.
