Parties want SONA postponed
from Midday Live Hosted by SAfm
The Democratic Alliance says it has written to National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to request that the State of the Nation Address be postponed. The party's leader, Mmusi Maimane says Mbete must allow the postponement and allow Parliament to elect a new President to lead South Africa. The SONA is scheduled for the 8th of February. Maimane says it is not in the best interest of the country to let President Jacob Zuma deliver the address. The DA's call echoes that of the EFF for Mbete to convene an urgent meeting with party leaders. This comes after the EFF won a Constitutional Court case against President Zuma in relation to his fitness to hold office. The EFF says establishing the suitability of Zuma is now more urgent now than the delivery of the SONA. Meanwhile the ANC says the motion is unlikely to succeed if tabled. Stephen Kirker spoke to political analyst Sanusha Naidoo.
