When the Pharcyde dropped Passing Me By in 1992, they probably knew it would be a hit. But they couldn’t have known that they’d be creating a piece of history. The track is as iconic as it gets. It’s so epic it can only be defined as historic. And at the same time, it helped a new generation move into the future with a little more confidence. In a lot of ways, hip-hop helped us move past some of our country’s worst history. But don’t get it twisted. If you’ve been watching the historic Supreme Court hearings to nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to become the first black woman to serve as a justice on the highest bench in the land, you’ve probably noticed that we aren’t past the worst parts of our history yet. And despite the fact that it has been chock full of WTF moments, you’ve got to keep in mind that it is all for show. Her nomination is almost guaranteed. But senators like Lindsey Graham and Josh Hawley will put on their song and dance to get clicks and money and act like victims when anybody questions why they are calling KJB a defender of pedophiles. Nevertheless, she keeps on passing them by.  And if you haven’t seen the hearings, don’t be too hard on yourself. It takes a certain kind of privilege to even be able to take the time out of the middle of your day to watch them.
