Passing on a mantle of authority
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
Today I got the sense of the symbolic passing on of a mantle in the sense of passing on ones authority and responsibility. I received a second confirmatory picture of a firmly blown up balloon with pressure applied to it, until it eventually burst. The air in a balloon will inevitably flow into the atmosphere it is in, whether it is released slowly or as a result of being burst. I believe that there is a connection between the two pictures of passing on authority or delegating, whether they are thought out decisions or circumstantially enforced. When prophet Elijah went up to heaven God passed his mantle of authority and miraculous power to Elisha as his successor, which is what Elisha desired and was trained for (2 Kings 2). Moses was advised to wisely delegate some of his leadership tasks to appropriate people, whilst maintaining ultimate human authority, to avoid burnout (Exodus 18). I say "human" as our supreme and ultimate authority is God. Let us be wise and humble in our passing on of authority and in delegating, also remembering that none of us is indispensable.
