Passing the Baton

If you were about to be executed for your faith and sharing the Gospel of Christ and you had one chance to write a letter to the person you had been discipling in the church, what would you say? Would you tell him to hide so he doesn’t suffer the same fate as you? Would you plead with him to be careful where and when he proclaimed the Gospel? Would you warn him not to tell the authorities about your friendship so as to avoid scrutiny? This was the actual situation the Apostle Paul found himself in at the end of his life. Sitting in possibly the most dreaded dungeon Rome could offer, Paul chose to write a final letter to his beloved friend and co-laborer in the faith, Timothy. We can learn so much from this beautiful letter. On Sunday we will bear down on chapter 2; specifically, we will consider the instruction Timothy received on continuing the mission and continuing to spread the Gospel of Christ. Paul gives his friend encouragement, warnings, and direction regarding the monumental task he is about to undertake. I am praying that Sunday morning we can learn more about the obstacles in the early church, God’s plan for overcoming those obstacles, and how we too can be “Timothys” in the present church; strong in the grace that is Christ Jesus.
