Paul Westhead (@CoachWesthead), the only Head Coach to win both a NBA Title (Los Angeles Lakers, 1980) and WNBA Title (Phoenix Mercury, 2007) joins us for a wide-ranging conversation that covers his incredible basketball career. Westhead invented “The System”, which has led to record-breaking scoring including his 1989-90 Loyola Marymount team setting an all-time single season scoring record of 122 points per game. Westhead shares incredible stories from coaching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Diana Taurasi, Bo Kimble and the late Hank Gathers. He also reflects on his Philadelphia upbringing (where he attended St. Joseph’s University and coached at Lasalle University), the hotbed of Philly coaches (Jack Ramsey, Jack McKinney, Jim Lynam, Matt Guokas and Westhead) and winning the 1980 NBA Championship with the Lakers in his hometown of Philadelphia against the 76ers. Westhead discusses his time at Loyola Marymount University where he coached the Lions to a Great Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after the tragic death of LMU star Hank Gathers.
