Paxton Defeats Cornyn in Senate Runoff; Chemical Tank Implosion Kills 1 | NTD Good Morning (May 27)
from NTD Good Morning
In Texas, State Attorney General Ken Paxton beat out Senator John Cornyn to race against Democrat James Talarico for the U.S. Senate seat. Paxton won President Trump’s endorsement late in the game, just one week before this runoff. Cornyn had served in the Senate for 23 years, and said he would still support the Republican ticket after his loss. In the race to replace Ken Paxton’s Attorney General position, Congressman Chip Roy lost to State Representative Mayes Middleton. On the Democrat side, Congressman Al Green was ousted by Representative Christian Menefee.A massive chemical tank collapsed Tuesday morning at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview, Washington. Officials say the tank contained nearly 900,000 gallons of a corrosive chemical mixture known as white liquor. The fire department says the collapse killed at least one worker and injured nine others. Emergency crews say recovery efforts were suspended overnight because the damaged tank remains unstable. Investigators say it remains unclear what caused the tank to implode. Recovery crews are expected to return today once the damaged structure can be safely stabilized.China, Mexico, and Canada were all part of a broader discussion on Tuesday, as U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer outlined the administration’s global economic trade strategy. He defended the administration’s focus on goods and manufacturing, even as the U.S. remains a services-heavy economy. He argued manufacturing is critical because it anchors communities, supports national security, strengthens supply chains, and creates upward mobility.
