In which Nehushta, having fled the horrors wrought by Roman soldiers, entrusts a newborn child to the care of a humble Syrian family and journeys with them to the Essene village by the Jordan, seeking sanctuary for the infant. There, faced with the austere customs of the Essenes, she pleads the child’s cause before their court, resulting in a rare and gracious acceptance that promises protection and nurture until the child comes of age.
