Rather than remain devastated, she transformed her fright into her life’s calling and became a specialist in the psychology of the performing artist. At The Juilliard School, she created the first of its kind, on-campus, fully staffed psychotherapy facility, offering unlimited, confidential sessions to serve the entire graduate and postgraduate student body. To date, The Juilliard School’s Counseling Services remains the only mental health service in the world for performing arts students in an independent performing arts institution. Elma continues to serve The Juilliard School as a clinical and organizational consultant. A licensed LCSW, CPC, Elma still sees clients in her private practice, lectures and conducts master classes. Hamlet’s Mirror is the result of the collective experiences of the hundreds of performing artists and clients she has counseled throughout her 35+ year career.
