Penguins Cheer Up Old Folks

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Sometimes, very old people live in places called care homes… special places with doctors and nurses to take care of them. Being very old can be hard. Some very old people can't walk very well and feel tired and bored. In England, one care home for old people had a fun idea. They said, "Hey! Let's bring some penguins to play with everyone… that way they won't feel so bored or lonely!" Yes! Penguins! Those little black and white birds that cannot fly. The penguins came from the zoo… and guess what? These penguins from the zoo are very friendly. They sit on the old people's laps and let them pet them. The great grandmothers and great grandfathers in this care home in England said the penguins were so cute. They said the penguins made them forget their problems and feel happy. What a nice story! We should be nice to old people. One day, we will be the old people! Ha! Can you imagine being 100 years old? Well, one day you might be! And maybe you will get to pet a penguin, too! ________________________________ Vocabulary 讓企鵝陪伴老人家,多麼有創意! 1. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
