Perfection VS. 'Good Enough' | SpaceX, NASA, & Coronavirus Response - The Balance TIS194

from Today In Space · host Alex G. Orphanos

We're discussing the Balance this week and having to taste our own medicine when it comes to how science and reality work. There's been a lot of talk on this podcast of the balance between theory and practice - specifically NASA and SpaceX. How their varying approaches can be wildy different...but can complement each other perfectly for the future of human space travel. This past month in response to 3D printing against coronavirus - we had to experience that dynamic first-hand. I had to personally draw the line of where perfection goes too far and when 'good enough' is in fact, good enough. We've been in the search for the best (and wanted) option for our heroes on the front lines of this pandemic. There's such a massive influx of people who want to help 3D print masks & faceshields and so little progress in finding the 'perfect' solution. It's tough - no one wants to give a solution that doesn't help people. But, people need a solution - fast. Supplies are low, healthcare is stretched thin, and the science for a cure can't move fast enough... This week, I discuss the challenges I faced in making that choice and WOW do I have a much greater appreciation for the balance of the Space Industry. From the decisions NASA has to make to make sure human lives are safe when traveling to space to how fast SpaceX is able to progress and solve problems, given virtually the same conditions as every other space company that's tried to do the same.
