Captain Wentworth soon becomes a fixture at Uppercross, and a favorite with Henrietta and Louisa Musgrove. It's delightful for everyone, except Anne, who would rather not be asked to referee conversations between Charles and Mary about which Musgrove sister Captain Wentworth likes best. But unbeknownst to Captain Wentworth, there's a rival for Henrietta's affection - her cousin Charles Hayter, a curate, who has just returned from two weeks away to find Henrietta utterly besotted. And amidst it all, Captain Wentworth can't help himself from showing kindness to Anne, like helping her handle her troublesome young nephew. Entanglements are forming, and Anne is left to observe it all from the outside.
