Las plantas poseen un sistema inmune basado en mecanismos moleculares. Un sistema molecular muy utilizado por las plantas para defenderse del ataque de algunos microrganismos es el formado por ácido ribonucleico (ARN) de doble hebra. En el caso de un intento de invasión de una planta por un virus, las células invadidas por este microrganismo pueden generar ARN de doble hebra que va a interferir con la transmisión de la información desde el genoma del virus a la producción de las proteínas que este necesita para reproducirse en el interior de la célula. Estudios realizados hasta la fecha han demostrado que la fumigación de plantas con ARN de doble hebra dirigido contra el ADN de un virus concreto las protege contra la infección de ese virus. Investigadores de las universidades de Estrasburgo y de Helsinki han desarrollado un sistema de producción de ARN de doble hebra capaz de generar grandes cantidades de estas moléculas que podrían utilizarse en lugar de los pesticidas actuales.
