In the 1960s he moved to Big Sur, California, and hung out with beatniks. Later he returned to England and opened a jazz club. He wrote two books, one a memoir of his time with Tristano, and one an examination of the works of pioneering psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, entitled The Environment and Cosmic Metabolism.Improvisation was released in 1968 on Ind’s Wave record label. The album consists entirely of Ind improvising bass tracks. Peter Ind was an early innovator of free jazz and specifically the reevaluation of the bass fiddle’s role in jazz music.
