Each of these young children believed that they remembered their most recent past life. Stevenson’sResearch Method His approach to reincarnation was unique. Dr. Stevenson’s used his skills as a detective, an investigative reporter and a social scientist. He methodically tracked down and interviewed firsthand eyewitnesses who personally knew a child who had memories of being part of a particular family in a past life. These children typically began talking about this previous lifetime when they were two or three years old and stopped talking about the past life by the age of six or seven. From his research, he confirmed that we tend to lose our memories of past lifetimes after the age of 7. Dr. Stevenson paid special attention to statements the child had made about that past-life family. Then -- using a scientific method -- he located the family of the individual who had died and been reincarnated as that child. Professor Stevenson would then take the child to meet with the family members and find out how much the child remembered about his or her life with that family before he or she had died. When the child met the family that they claimed to be from, the child typically remembered so many specific details about that life as part of that family. During that meeting, those memories were then confirmed by members in that family – from family secrets to the names of pets. Dr. Stevenson would cross-examine the family members involved – looking for possible bias for or against the child as well as confirmations or conflicts in the child’s recall as that past-life person. Dr. Stevenson investigated past-life cases: on five continents from around the globe among peoples of widely varying cultural patterns, involving families who did not believe in reincarnation and from societies where the religious dogma sternly preached against a belief in reincarnation. WhatDoes the Research into the Past Lives of Children Show? His research showed that the previous lives of these children frequently ended prematurely and unnaturally, often involving violence, suicide, or an accident. In fact, in 75% of his cases, the “previous personality” died relatively young. On average, he found that the previous personalities died about four-and-a-half years before the birth of the child who remembered being that particular person.
