In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patre Mathers and her husband Michael mailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know they had died by suicide. Dear honeys, this is goodbye. By the time you get the letter, both Patre and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland.

Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? Listen to Death of an Artist on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Did you think you were the only one, like no matter what you did, it was never good enough for your mother?

I'm Jennifer Arnees, and this is the Black Mother One Podcast, where we unpack and heal from the very first relationship that shaped us. We rush to accommodate other people when we have been hurt, and our hurt has not been healed. Listen to the Black Mother One Podcasts from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your podcasts. It's time for our weekly conversation with college football analyst, Bhabadikis.

Bhabadikis, brought to you by Sweet James, Exeter, and attorneys. Three, one, guys! It's your hurt in an accident called Sweet James right away, and 850, 200. Sweet James will be sweet to you, but tough on insurance companies that will bully you.

Maroo, la ta, adonai, maroo, la ta, ushela. And now with Betros, beers, Dave Softie Muller. Closer. Alrighty, boys and girls, here we go on a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, right here on 93.3KJRFM, it's absolutely our pleasure.

To get to talk to, as deemed by the readers of Spun Magazine, one of the worst football broadcasters in America, only being beaten out by the likes of Kirk Herb Street, Joe Buck, and Tony Roboe, a Southern California football legend, a radio icon, and a broadcast engineer, pioneer, our friend, father of the month, husband of the year, great American, and one damn fine Greek American, our buddy, Petros, Papadakis. Brought to you by... Yassa Softie, Sweet James! The dense beard of justice is our sponsor, the quite simply greatest personal injury that ever lived.

He knows how to hold that insurance company accountable if you've ever been in a car accident or motorcycle accident or if a dog bites your ball. So give him a call. 800-9 million, or SweetJames.com. I think one of the great accomplishments of your broadcast career, bar none.

Readers of... what does it call it again? The Spun Bedding Guide, naming you... What was that?

I thought it was Atlon. Well, it just says the Spun Bedding Guide to the cover of the magazine. It may have been published by Atlon's. I don't know.

I'm looking at it right here. There's, you know, say, Juan Barkley, or... It's also in an Atlon. Okay.

Well, Atlon must... I don't know. Paired company, Atlon's. Okay.

The readers of Atlon's, the readers of the Spun Bedding Guide, the editors of deemed you, only to be beaten out by Gary Daniels and Kirk Herb Street, Joe Buck, and Tony Roboe, one of the worst football broadcasters in the country. And I would just like to compliment you on that accomplishment. Honestly, I'm not even kidding. I'm not even being sarcastic.

All the things that you've done in your career, FS1, Prose vs. Joe's, everything you've been a part of, your work on KNBC, your work with Matt Moneysmith, this clearly to me is the top of the mountain for your career. I wanted any, too. Congratulations.

I even want a local Emmy. Congratulations, my friend. Where does this accomplishment rank for you? Well, I mean, I look at all those other guys' names and I wish that somebody would pay me.

You know, those other guys are like really, really rich guys. Those guys fly private. You know, so you're calling games from a studio in LA somewhere? Oh, yeah, basically.

Sorry. I'll be in Michigan State next week, though. You're actually going out there. Okay, good.

Yeah. But yeah, I was looked at. There's always people that pay attention to your work and our work is very subjective. I say often, even though people tell me differently from time to time, that no one watches a football game because of the guy calling it.

Ooh, they just don't. I do for you. Well, yeah, well, yeah, because you're my friend. We have a relationship, but you know what I mean.

I mean, and nobody really knows about these players and teams the way we think they do. The statistics tell us that we need to reintroduce the players like every single quarter and every single moment. You know, your audience is always changing, but it's a subjective thing. I just, I mean, Joe Buck and Romo and even Gary Daniels.

I mean, these people are very prevalent for years and years in college football. And I guess you could say I am too. Well, not Joe Buck. He doesn't do college football.

Well, the picture that was tweeted out by this person, they cut off half of the paragraph here on the on the on the paper. So I love to read it, but I can't read it all because it's cut off. It says, Petros's name may not ring a bell. However, if you've watched second tier college football games on TV, especially when the Pac-12 was on, you undoubtedly know his name.

You also undoubtedly have a few ibuprofen bottles nearby. If you haven't heard Petros call the game, consider yourself lucky. That is freaking awesome. Dude, honestly, like I can see the look on your face.

You're stewing right now. And you shouldn't. This is awesome. This is an unbelievable compliment by these people.

I'm believing. I just, I would like a raise to see my name in lights with those other guys. I just feel like I deserve, you know, if I'm garnering that much attention. Yeah, I'd like some compensation.

Absolutely. I've got the extra fitty from Sweet James. I appreciate that. Pretty good.

Prince Lee Sun. Oh God. Well, you know what? We'll bring it up.

I mean, you mad at me? I don't know. I don't care. Did you not talk about this on your radio show?

No. Why not? Because when I went on the radio show, usually I just talk about stuff. If there's awards or things like that, I just talk about stuff that pertains to the both of us.

Okay. Well, my partner had brought it up. Right. And I don't think he likes X very much.

So if my partner had brought it up, I would have discussed it. But he did. Yeah. Well, I mean, you even beat out 41 yards.

She got the honorable mention. Did she really? Yeah. She's on the list.

Chris Collinsworth. I mean, these are some of the elite broadcasters in America, man. So I honestly believe that this is a good thing for you. Don't take this as a negative.

I think Collinsworth does a great job. I was mentioned in an obscure betting magazine, Avalon offshoot of skier betting magazine. That is dwarfed by Phil Steele. And I was surprised to be mentioned with people that are that famous.

Well, maybe we'll get you some extra commercial spots up here to make up for it or something like that. I'm available. Get you some endorsements here. I know I'm very popular in the Northwest.

You are. You're a big deal. Well, Petros is with us. What is your guide to Sean Foster doing down there?

We just had John Willner on the air and he's talking about this. Did you see this story that leaked today or not leaked? It's the LA Times guy, Ben Bolsch. Right.

Is not happy about the UCLA. And these are not people that have never covered a camp before. Right. And to Sean Foster has really locked it up.

They're not getting any footage. They're not getting any access to players. They're getting the big FU. Why?

Carl Dorell did a little bit like that way back in the day. And he had a very capable SID, the old Mark Delans, if you remember. Oh, yeah, of course. A great guy.

So it's a conundrum because, you know, at a certain point you say, I get it. You got a new offense. But ball coaches are paranoid. I mean, I remember Paul Hackett, who I played for thinking that they were people hiding in the parking structure.

You know, that's above. And maybe they were. I don't know. And the Sean's got a new offensive coordinator, Tino Sensari, from Indiana.

He was a kid from UW. His brother, by the way, was right. And he was a co-coordinator at Indiana. So I believe this is his first year call in place.

So there is a certain amount of mystery there. And maybe he doesn't want anybody to look. He said that he doesn't want anybody seeing what they're doing and using their stuff on Twitter. And it's like, you know, it's not really like, I don't think it's like that in the world of college football.

Connor Stallion's not to mention him. But still, I just, I don't think, I just, it seems like a real overkill. It seems like killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer. And he's pissing off the local media.

There's not a lot of buzz about UCLA football. But they do have, just like Michigan State pulled last year in 18, Charles, at Oregon State. The number one quarterback in the transfer portal is Nico Iamalayama. And he's at UCLA.

And he did it. Let's not promote him. Let's not get his name out there. They put him on the Big Ten Network to have Yogi Roth wash his balls the other day.

And they, they let him talk on a Big Ten media day. Right. But that was that. And the media for UCLA is complaining about lack of access.

And they can't do any human interest stories or tell anybody about the players. And Deshawn Foster said, well, whatever. It really is an interesting exchange at Ben Vultchaz on the LA tie. I think it's on his Twitter feed right now.

And Ben Vultch says, well, we're looking for human interest stories. And he's like, we don't care. They said, well, what about marketing? And he's like, well, I'll leave that up to you guys.

It's like, well, we can't market the team if you won't give us any access. And you know, this has long been the push and pull. You know, how many Washington coaches have you lived through? Six, seven since you've been in the media?

Yeah, yeah. And you never know what that guy's going to be like as far as accessibility and what you're going to be able to see a Nazi, even if you are working with them as the flagship radio. I mean, there's always questions as to how people are going to handle it and how a new regime is going to be. But Deshawn seems to be a little bit lacking here.

The other thing is they have a practice field that's not done. UCLA just notoriously overregulated government functional dysfunction with the UC system where you need like three signatures just to get a pencil sharpener. And they've been trying to get their practice field fixed since February. And it's not going to be done until the end of September.

So there's a lot of, I don't know, more questions and answers, but they do open up in a real competitive game against Utah. At the Rose Bowl and USC opens up against Missouri State and Georgia Southern. So that's a little bit different. And that's why there's not a lot of buzz about look, we haven't had a consistently good UCLA team since Kate McNown was there.

Maybe maybe Chip Kelly got him there with a with a DRT, but or DTR, right? But we haven't really seen. I mean, more. I had some consistency with Brett Huntley.

I should say that it's been a while since we've had UCLA consistency. I should say it hasn't been all the way back to K McNown. And we know how inconsistent USC has been. We talked about it for years on the show.

And I, you know, I don't know what'll happen in LA if you see if USC ever gets consistent again, because we before we didn't have the Rams and Chargers during the peak Carol era. You know, now you have two pro teams taking up a lot of the airspace in a town that has a lot of people that just don't care about sports or if they do, you know, they care about the El Salvadorian soccer team. So it's an interesting client for a guy that came up in the sports media with USC football was a big deal and getting bigger and bigger every year. It is an interesting climate here in LA.

UCLA is not one of New Year's six bowl games since the Cotton Bowl and Bob Toledo in 97. They haven't won a Rose Bowl since 85. That's 40 years, man. They've won like 20 plus games and then lost right to they've won 20 plus games with with Bob Toledo and came back down to Dave Farmer and Brendan and all those guys and they beat the one of that Cotton Bowl and then remember they lost to Miami and they so they didn't get into the first BCS game.

The game was rescheduled because of the hurricane in 98 and Edger and James ran all over him or something like that. And then they lost the Rose Bowl to a Wisconsin team, very Alvarez team. So that's how it played. That was a great little history lesson there, man.

I always feel like I learned something when you come on this show. Honestly, it's an education, which is important, which is why I again consider the fact that you are one of the nation's top five best football broadcasters and not the worst. I was just looking it up. Actually, as you kind of peak my interest.

I've covered nine coaches now at UW. Lambo, New Highsle, Gilby, Willingham, Sark, Peterson, Jimmy, DeBore, and now Jed. And I gotta tell you, I don't agree with the way Jed does the media stuff either, to be honest with you. I mean, he says things like, we want to have practice open, we want our kids to know what it's like to play in front of people.

Well, how about you have them all face the media so they know what it's like to have to do interviews when they play the NFL. It's they were getting like one guy after practice. That's it. So there's a little bit of inconsistency there.

But Petros back in the day, I know that coaches would not let players talk and maybe it's still the case. Lambo would do this where he would not let guys talk because he thought they were stupid and they say something dumb. Like Andre Desch's you were back in the day, got suspended for saying Pullman stunk, like smelt, and so he suspended him and he wouldn't want to talk in the media. So pay for Mel and Lewis.

No, no for sure. Well, look, we got Ohio State and Texas and week one. We got Iowa State, Kansas State this Saturday. But then I mean, it's this week, one or week zero.

How are we zero? We zero. Okay. I'm interested in Fresno State with EJ Warner at Kansas, right?

Yeah, at Kansas with Daniel's who's a local guy who's been there forever. Yeah, of course they don't have Devin Neal anymore, but they got a new stadium and Leipold is a hell of a coach. Kansas football is not a mausoleum anymore. So that's that's exciting.

And, you know, obviously, well, Texas, Ohio State is week one, right? Not weeks. Let's understand if this is week zero than it's week one. If not, it's week zero.

Okay. Okay. My point is my point is this. I just because I want to get this out.

My point is this. You dubs got Colorado State. You've already told us we should be very fearful of in week one. And then they got UC Davis, Chris Peterson's on the water.

And then they have a buy, then they have the Apple Cup in Pullman. I think the Huskies, I think we should expect three and all. That's a fair expectation to be three and all Ohio State beats Texas. They'll be number one.

That means on September 27th. Red shirt, freshman, Julian Seyan, who's never started a road game is going to be walking into a Rokas Husky stadium crowd. Is that going to matter for a kid like that? Flying 2000 miles across the country?

Can I start looking at Ohio State or should I just squarely focus on the Rams? You think next setter? I think that it's a reasonable expectation. I think it is a reasonable expectation that that's going to be a big game and a big moment for Washington football and for your young quarterback as well.

But it's not look, it's not easy to travel. I remember Ohio State with Jim Tressel coming out to USC early in a non-conference game with the Pete Carroll era. They got beat, not blown out, but beat pretty clearly. And the same thing happened in Nebraska and things like that.

So it's not easy to come out to the West Coast either. I mean, I did a game where Arkansas came to USC. I mean, Arkansas had Peyton Hillis, Darren McFadden. They had the court of the Felix Jones.

They had three great pro backs and they lost 70 to seven. Well, we'll know it's been tracking that that teams go in multiple time zones, whether heading that way or coming this way or not done well. Yeah, so what's the knock on Ohio State this year other than the great receiver is that they are a young team and an experienced team. So they could be had, you know, but they're going to open up against Texas, which is a big strong football team with another inexperienced quarterback has only started a game against Louisiana and Rome.

But a guy that everybody likes a whole lot. So I'm looking forward, the intrigue of college football is here so we can finally stop hating on our sport and tracking all the things that we despise about it and actually, you know, have some games. All right. Well, congratulations on the honor of being named one of the worst football broadcasters in the country.

Thank you. I believe my family jealous of you, by the way, my prowess in the Northwest is probably contributor there. So I have no question, no question. And your performance on this radio show, which I'm sure it's good stuff.

We're talking a week. Thank you. Bye everybody. See you have Petros pop up on the show.

I mean, I think that's a compliment. Don't you want to worst broadcasters in the country and Ramos on the list with Herb Street? I'm just going to go. Would you let it go?

It's just a stupid magazine. See, I knew it bothered you. I knew it. Why did you go to break so that guy can do more boner commercial?

Mark James, we'll get a good job, Mark. That's a good commercial. We don't want to live up to the big moment. I'm going to break.

I'm going to throw it in five. I'm not even going to throw it. The entire draft room groans because you just took the guy they wanted. There's no better feeling than crushing your fantasy football league.
