Pour autant c'est un propos à nuancer.Dans une étude européenne qui date de 2017, des chercheurs affirment "qu’il serait possible de nourrir plus de 9 milliards d’êtres humains en 2050 avec 100 % d’agriculture bio". A condition de respecter deux conditions majeures.Le gaspillage alimentaire dans le viseurIl est indispensable de le réduire. Aujourd'hui, on produit déjà assez de nourriture pour subvenir aux besoins de 10 milliards de personnes mais on en gaspille un tiers. Si on mettait un frein à ce gâchis, on pourrait largement compenser les rendements plus bas du bio ! Deuxième condition : réduire notre consommation de viande.Environ 77 % des terres agricoles servent à nourrir des animaux d’élevage. Si on consommait moins de viande, on pourrait utiliser ces terres pour diversifier les cultures, tout en nourrissant davantage de personnes.Moins de gaspillage, moins de viande : deux conditions qui permettraient d'ouvrir la voie à un système alimentaire durable.Enfin, il est important de souligner que l'agriculture biologique est plus résiliante face aux changements climatiques.
