Philippians — Week 5

Philippians 2:1-11 turns the conditional if into a rallying motivation: because believers genuinely have encouragement, comfort, and the Spirit, Paul calls them to like-mindedness and unity. Being united with Christ means being united with one another, and there is no such thing as a lone Christian. The world will know Jesus' disciples not by buildings, logos, or social media but by how they love one another, making the New Testament's many one another commands the primary activity of the church. Humility is defined as believing what God says about you over anyone else's opinion, including your own. The hymn of Christ's self-emptying anchors the call: Jesus poured himself out like a drain, took the nature of a servant, and was obedient to death, modeling first what he asks of us.
